Question Protecting and Preserving Celtic Tradition

    Guys,

My family is having a tough time understanding my wanting to preserve and protect our Scottish heritage. They don't understand the kilt. How can I get them to understand the meaning behind it. (protecting our Celtic past)?

"Celtic" is a much broader term than I think you might be thinking.

Possibly, then I mean Scottish or Irish in general.

Tell them that no matter what happens, they will always be Celtic. It is what always keeps me tied to my heritage.

If they don't respond to that, tell them that it is something very important to you and that you hope they can respect that.

I prefer to refer to it as Gaelic culture myself..

    Anyway, unto the important advice.

    -Learn all you can.
-Enjoy it as much as you can.
-Pass on what you learn to others, wether they want to hear it or not.

Always remember that never everyone will have the same interests, sometimes you have meet someone half way. Example: Let them realize that you are excepting of their interests and passions.

Although, I'm starting to understand more and more, everyday... That those who do not like something, it's because they don't understand it. Usually they have no desire to understand it either.

So, when it comes to kilts and such.. folks tend to really build extra barriers to prevent them from understanding why someone wants to wear a kilt. Not to mention the years of social influence of what is a proper garmet is for men to be wearing.

One of recent my commets to family members goes like this:

Family member: "gives me a funny look, with the expression that reads (you're actually going out in public in that)."

I respond: "hey, where's your kilt?"
