    Kilted on ER

This was probably brought up years ago but I was watching a rerun of ER yesterday on TNT and they had kilt paranoia on it. The show was probably from 96 or 97 based on the cast and references so kilts were far less common back then.

Anyway, One of the main administrative doctors was brought into the ER. One of the nurses came to the front desk and encouraged all of the other nurses and doctors to come and see Morganstern in a "Catholic School Girl Outfit". They all gathered around to look and had a good laugh.

He appeared to be wearing a Black Watch kilt and white Jacobite shirt. When the attending doctor came in he explained that he was at the Highland Games and dropped a caber on his leg while attempting a throw. There was blood and he broke his leg. He then bemoaned that he was supposed to cut the haggis at the Burns Dinner that night but was now stuck in the hospital and would miss it.

A scene or two later and his sons and nephews showed up playing the pipes and drums in kilts and delivering the haggis for him. The staff seemed to have a lot more respect than the school girls comments.

I remember one day when I visited my mother in my Black Watch and her first comment was that it was her favorite skirt as a teenager. The Catholic school history really runs deep sometimes.

Sorry if this is old news - just found it interesting yesterday.

...which begs the questions in my mind...just when and why did Catholic schools decide to adopt tartan as girls' uniform material and when did society at large start identifying tartan as "girls' school unifrom material" and not as Scottish kilt material? Doesn't seem like you see many people walking up to a kid in a plaid jumper and saying, "Oh...you look like a Scotsman!"

The way I understand it is that, during England's Victorian era, boys wore kilt outfits at the best schools. When girls began attending such schools, they adopted the same uniforms the boys wore. Catholic girls' schools kept up the tradition after it was largely dropped elsewhere.

In other words, Catholic school girls are dressed like Victorian era school boys.
