It would be nice to see picture of them before buying but these are great options for a PC style coat modification project.
I picked up an Eton Tux jacket which is basically the same thing as this and turned it into a formal jacket.
Then add a 3 button vest to the jacket and you will have a nice looking outfit for formal occasions.

While I do well know of spencer coats I don't quite know why tracy? I don't what know what Tracy was in the House of Spencer (Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, was the father of the the late Princess Diana) but I'd suspect someone mistook Spencer Tracy for ... :-)
Spencer coats have been the rage, off and on, since the late 18th century and continue to be the basis for many formal coates. In the 1950s they were "the jacket" in North America for ladies cocktail attire.

spencer and tracy are the brand names, have nothing to do with scottish ancestery. go to there website, look up tux. find one with tails and then imagine it without the tails.

Spencer is an English and not Scottish family. The seat of the Spencers is Althorp in Northamptonshire.
These coats are not then "spencer coats" but some "Spencer and Tracy branded" coats? Spencer coats are open coats, often without buttons, cut at the waistline. What are these?

nanook, i apologize for giving up, the wife says i don't explain things very well.
spencer tracy and kate hepburn were both movie stars in the 30's-50's and made quite afew movies together. in some of these movies he wore a
formal tux with tails. hence they refer to this style as a spencer or a tracy
or a spencer tracy. i hope that helps some, let me know if it doesn't.

That might be the misplaced motivation but the "tux without tails" was called a Spencer jacket long before Mssr Tracy was born. The style first caught on at the end of the 18th century. The style is named after the first Earl Spencer (1734–1783). Legend has it that his tails caught fire from an open flame and so he had them removed to the delight of London fashion. Whatever the origin these short top coats without tails were widely called "Spencer coats" by the 1790s. At that time they were worn with loads of military medals but we need only look at the evolution of the modern suit (born on Saville Row) to see the clear connection to officers uniforms.
