Kilted road trip! Vegas & US West coast.
Vacation time has been confirmed (April 19th - May 6th) so it's time for another "patented Gingles road trip". Hopefully Karen and I can meet up with a number of Xmarkers along the way. Woohoo!
Here's a tentative itinerary, although it could change drastically without notice. That's what makes the trip "patented". LOL
We've booked a room for 6 nights at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas starting April 20th. We'll be there for the Celtic Event & Xmarks gathering on the weekend, then we'll spend a few days exploring the region.
We're planning on hauling the Harley with us on the trip so we can enjoy the warmth & sun. The Laughlin River Run motorcyle rally starts on the 25th and we plan to ride down for the day.
Thursday the 26th we'll head down to the San Diego area so we can start our trip up the coast right at the Mexican border. We plan to drive the PCH & Hwy 101 wherever possible. Landlocked people need to see the ocean once in awhile, ya know.
From San Diego we'll head up to the LA area on Friday and probably spend Saturday there. I just need some tips as to what part of the city to stay in. SOmeplace safe, but close to the sights.
On Sunday we'll head up to San Francisco and spend the night there, before heading into Oregon on Monday. Not sure where in oregon we'll stop, probably somewhere around Coos Bay. Any thoughts?
From there we'll head into Seattle where we hope to spend at least a couple of nights.
We might head up to Vancouver for a night before heading home, but it will depend on how well the money lasts, and how tired we are. Who knows, we may lose it all in Vegas and have to go home via Greyhound!
Anyway, that's a basic outline of our plan. We'd love to meet up with anyone who lives along our route.

Of course the Harley has to make the trip on the trailer. ;)

What sights? L.A. is a huge area, incomprehensibly large compared to most cities. There is basically a continuous urban zone from south Malibu to Camp Pendleton, all of which is considered "L.A." to some extent. (The Orange County residents will dispute this, but for metro areas, it's generally true).
What did you plan on seeing in LA, I might be able to give you some ideas where to stay.
OH!! Just remembered. If you are in the San Diego/LA area May 6th or 7th, Celtic Woman is touring here.

Hehehehehe! I feel bad about trailering the bike, but it's the only way we'd be able to take it. April in the Rockies can be very unpredictable, weather-wise. Plus we have to get from Calgary to LV in 2 days, which will involve almost 24 hours behind the wheel. So...the bike gets hauled down. Oh well, at least it will be there when we want to enjoy it.
As for the fun of road trips...that's one of the things my wife loves the best about me. She loves to do road trips, and I'd much rather drive than fly anywhere. Not that we don't like to fly, but you get to see more and experience more if you drive.

Sigh...we have to be back home no later than the 4th, so we'll miss that show.
As for what we'd like to see...mainly the usual "touristy" type stuff. Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Griffin (sp?) Park, some of the beaches, etc. We'll only have a day or so top spend there, so we can't do too much. As our budget is tight we'll most likely be staying at Motel 6's and such. Nothing too spendy.

Hey Al,
So your going to hit San Francisco on Sunday April 30th? Love to hook up with you, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to make it to the city that day. Depends if I go to the Sacramento Highland games in Woodland that weekend. Please keep us informed of your travel plans.
Best regards,
Jake

Sacramento Highland Games?? Do you have a link to the games? We may change our plans a bit and try to attend them if possible.

Well, I spoke with SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) today about skipping part of the trip so we can attend the Sacramento games. She thinks since we are already going to the games in Las Vegas, we should stick to our original plans and stay down "south" for the weekend. One "games" per vacation is enough. Oh well, "E" for effort. LOL
We still hope to be able to get together with some local X-Markers along the way, at our various overnight stops.
