I bought hose from Jerry over at Stillwater kilts. They're inexpensive but nice on the feet. I have a hard time getting my 20 something inch calf in them, but other than that, I love 'em.

If you have a larger than normal calve, I recommend
http://www.hamiltondrygoods.com/sock.html
they have limited colors, but for $8 these socks can be dyed any color or shade you want with a bottle of Rit Dye from the store. Until I get a pair of handnit or Argyle or Diced hose, these will be what I wear most likely (although the new ones Matt is carrying are calling to me ).

On ebay some guy been selling lots of 2/4/7/and 14 pairs of kilt hose for cheap. I've almost gotten some a couple of times but always find something else to buy.

I've tried the soccer socks type socks and found them to be sort of un-bulky enough and pretty tight...and I'm not one of those guys with the big calves, either.
Another factor is wool versus anything else...wool is fer sure the way to go. Wool, though, means "$$ to $$$$" as opposed to "$ to $$" for the other materials...that's the way it goes, I guess.

I've got several pairs of the SportKilt socks and I do wear them. Where they work best for me are warmer days when sweating in wool makes me itch. I've worn them up and they look OK casually but more often, I wear them scrunched down with boots, again in warmer weather. My only real complaint is that they have quite a bit elastic and tend to constrict my calves, even scrunched down and I don't have massive calves.
I like the color range and the lightness the best.
I seem to remember that Riverkilt has some of these too.

Geez, Mowgli...I wear wool socks year round with kilts or whatever. I've found that they're generally cooler and - shall we say - less odiferous than anything else. I assume that it's the wicking action that accomplishes this. There's a Merino Wool hiking sock that Wigwam makes that's perfect...and I wear hiking boots most of the time...and an occaisional pair of gym shoes...but no more python boots...my rock days are over...
