A wooden kilt pin.
Okay, I attempted carving a wooden kilt pin to go with my Pacific Trail Hiker Sportkilt.
It's too lightly colored to see the details, but on the front there is a small cross carved in. On the side then it reads, 'J.L.F. R.I.P.' 'J.L.F.' are my dad's initials. And being that he was an vid fisherman, and taught me how to fish, I figured it was something I could do being that I'm going to do most of my fishing in my Hiker kilt.

This could be an excellent opportunity to use rare earth magnets to attach it to your kilt and to add weight. Hope you can post better pics to show the detail. Gotta love innovation, well done.

It's way too light to see the carving. And I figured it was nice, as well as practical

I think he would be. I even fished his knife out of the very deepest, darkest corners of my tackle box to carve it with.

it might be that if you could stain it, and wipe off the stain right away, that the carvings will show up. Try it on a sample and see.
DALE.
You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

so thats what you were doing...well, if you use a bigger stick for the pin you could probrably make a deeper cut for the cross and use its extra weight, and when/if you stain it, it will be lighter on the surface but stay dark inside the cross and lettering

Yeah, I might try the staining idea, and something bigger. I'll stroll across the street looking for wood when I finish cutting the grass.
