What do you guys think of this ensemble?


For those of you drooling over my recently debuted Harris Tweed kilt suit, we now have something similar to offer at the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop. See:

We will be offering made-to-order kilt jackets in a variety of "tweed" patterns. I have "tweed' in quotes because the fabric is not actually tweed, it's a medium weight worsted wool. But the patterns are inspired by those of nineteenth century estate tweed checks.

You'll notice in the above picture that I'm wearing a solid color vest. We also have a range of solid colors that are made to tone well with the check patterns. (Those are not yet pictured on our web site, but I plan on adding them on Monday).

You'll be able to order a standard Argyle style jacket (as pictured) or if you like a plain kilt jacket -- plain cuffs, no epaulets, plain pocket flaps, normal round buttons. Essentially a blazer made to wear with a kilt. I know a lot of you have been on the lookout for a more modern sports coat for kilt wear and this will be just the thing.

We've got the jackets and vests priced together for $495. You can order both in the same matching pattern (or solid color) or mix and match as I did in the picture above. Kilts can also be ordered to acheive a really nice matching kilt suit.

For some reason I think you need a shooting stick to finish the look. Personally I'm not overly crazy over the pattern, I much, much prefer the solid coloured tweed. I'd also go with the same coloured waistcoat.
All in all I think that the look is smashing.

I think non-metallic buttons on the jacket are called for; leather, bone, antler, etc.

The shiny buttons seem out of place, otherwise I like it.

Like Jerry, I would prefer some sort of antler/bone/leather-covered type of button. But, Mr. Newsome, that is SMASHING.

Yes to leather/bone/antler buttons... handsome on you, I'm afraid it would end up at the back of my kilt kloset.

I like it, as others have commented the silver buttons seem a wee bit formal for such an outfit, however I see that you have the plain buttons on the modern kilt jacket I would like to see what it looks like.

Hallelujah! Finally someone offering what I've been looking for for years.

Matt, will we be able to specify a three-button jacket with lapels that are a bit shorter (a bit more of a modern cut)? Also, are any of the available solid color (specifically charcoal) tweeds available in 13 oz. cloth? If so, I'll start my JSF (Jacket Savings Fund) tomorrow morning when the bank opens.

wood/bone/antler/leather buttons would be nice....however the metal ones in the pic compliment that kilt pin nicely. I really like the look.

I like the combo. The kilt and jacket look good together.

A side question (for my sake):
I am not used to wearing vests and, therefore, am not sure of the proper/traditional matters of matching/coordinating them.
Are they generally supposed to match?
-to either the jacket (if solid/tweed) or the kilt (in tartan, set at a diagonal)?

What about a solid color that matches a tartan kilt, with a tweed jacket?
What about a black or gray vest with a tweed jacket?

I am thinking about making myself some vests (out of 100% wool fabrics). I am wondering about proper coordination between my tartan kilts and the 4 or 5 tweed and solid black jackets I am have modified or that are in process.

I happen to like the look of a vest and jacket with a kilt. However, as the jackets are "hand-me-downs" and thrift buys and the vests are made from yardage bought from my favorite reenactement suppliers (high/nice grade), they cannot exactly match and I don't (at this time) want to pay for a custom made jacket/vest combo.
