Never done both, but since the plaid is generally fastened much higher than a boutonierre, I don't much think it'll matter. The fringe does hang down some, it's probably OK.
The tow items have a much different purpose, so unless the colors really clash, one would think it fine to wear both.
But then, I tend to think it's best to ere on the side of caution, and it's better to be understated than overstated. We don't want to look gawdy, and just because we have all the stuff doesn't mean we have to wear it all every time we don a kilt. I fear that I would look foolish if I had everything I own on my body, including the basket hilt sword I keep for haning on the wall!
Why don't you try it with and without the plaid and then deicde what looks best?
