Ever since my late wife and I visited Scotland and attended the Braemar Gathering of the Clans, I have wanted to wear a kilt. I have zero Scottish blood in me but I'm facsinated by the history and the look of Highland Dress. I work in a resort hotel and was a concierge at the time, so last Halloween I rented an authentic Prince Charlie/Black Watch outfit and wore it to work that day. I quickly overcame my initial fears and was astounded by the positive response, especially from the ladies! Naturally, I was asked "The" question, and had a lot of fun answering. I would officially designate a kilt as a "Chick Magnet"; I know that sounds crass, but it is no joke. The reaction from the men was equally surprising.....most said it was a "good look" and each was impressed with the female take on it. Only one homophobe called it a skirt, so I quickly gave him the definition of "kilt", as in "that's what I did to the last guy who called it a skirt". I have since ordered that same outfit and it is being made in Scotland as we speak. I wait in eager anticipation because I am an opera lover and plan to wear it to each performance this season, rather than a tux. I happened to meet a couple visiting from Ayr, Scotland the other day, so I engaged them in a conversation about my kilt experience. I was shocked at the husband's reaction and the wife's support. He said he wouldn't be caught dead wearing a kilt! This was a man with a thick Scottish brogue who acted as though I was crazy for even considering wearing one! I have heard of men who are not secure enough in their own masculinity and are afraid of being labeled a "queer", but I never dreamt that a Scot could feel that way. Oh, well, I guess you can't force someone to embrace his heritage. I feel sorry for him. I'm new to the group and look forward to participating in the dialogue. Cheers!
