    In the supermarket.

Last thursday I decided to wear kilt to work, so I took out my blackwatch casual , a nice black tshirt and a utility west and headed off.

Since it's summer and most of the guys are on vacation I was more or less alone at work and didn't garner any comments per se, one or two of the customers that came it made a nice comment... bu that was about it.

Then I went off to buy my lunch at a nearby supermarket. As I passed by the freezers, I see (out of the corner of my eye) a old man stop dead in his tracks and turn his head towards me.
I kept on walking, but it felt like he was staring at me. So after 10 feet or so I turned around and stared at the place I thought he was at... and sure enough, the old man stood there staring at me with a confounded look.
I locked gazes with him and stared back for about 3 seconds, after which I turned back and kept on walking as if nothing had happened... well I admit that I grinned abit

As I drove back to work I thought that it had been a perfect moment for a "Didn't your mother teach you that it in impolite to stare?" or "Can I help you".

You should have walked up to him and leaned in and asked him... "Excuse me for staring, but WHY on EARTH are you wearing PANTS?"

I used to hate supermarket shopping - just another tedious chore to get done. But now I actually look forward to it. I sometimes wonder though if the checkout folk are puzzled when they discover I don't have a Scottish accent.

I get asked if I'm Scottish all the time, like I have to be from Scotland to wear a comfortable garment, which for me does show a part of my heritage.

Aye, going to the grocery store can be quite entertaining. I usually get asked "where are you from?" I always answer "I'm from Tennessee" and wait for the blank look of confusion. It happens more in town than in the Commissary on post. Next time tell him where he can get a kilt of his very own.

    Tony

    Hello The SP8
I'm new to the group and I stopped after I had seen your avatar it's great.
Hey do you think it be OK to wear a black kilt to a 4th of July party? I live in Southern California and it's been hot out here and I have not gone out in it yet and it came last week.
Happy 4th to y'all and Deo Vindice

You can use my line that I have below my name!

    DALE.

You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

The people who work at my supermarket have grown accustomed to seeing me and many of them have positive things to say, same with most of the patrons, now all I get at the supermarket are smiles, nods or a compliment. I think a lot of it is conditioning, people like to see men in kilts you just have to get them used to it.

When people have asked if I play bagpipes, I've responded, "No, but I've heard them" and keep moving on. They don't see to get the jab. Perhaps I need to add: "Did you know that bagpipes only play in B flat? ... I was working on a transcription the other day for....

I've also responded, when asked if I'm Scottish (or Irish), "No, I'm Spanish".
