Question for Pipers
I'd like to write a tune of some sort that could be played by pipes. I don't play pipes, so I'm not really sure what the limitations of the pipes are. What key are highland pipes in? and what sort of scales can they play? I know chromatics are probably impossible.

a very comprehensive answer

as well theres a conversion chart at the bottom
beware that when playing with other instruments like guitars you can mosly busk along with them using chords based around B flat and E flat, but in hot/cold conditions or tempreture variations, the pipes WILL shift always tune your pipes in the same conditions as you will be using them tuning a set of pipes in a church and then going out on a cold Scottish morning to pipe people into church will end up with out of tune pipes and when you go back into church your drones will propably give up.
youtube President Fords funeral for an example of a set of pipes that dont like the weather conditions.
