    Mass production

Ok, I don't know if this is the correct place for this thread.

So, I am now in charge of a high school marching trombone section. As A kilt wearer, I have "influenced" the group for the last few years before I became fully in charge. we've done braveheart themed shirts. and cheers about freedom.

they have asked me if we could have for this upcoming year a trombone exclusive section kilt.

I am not a person who knows alot about sewing. I know the basics of a sewing machine and thats it. but I don't want to be having others make them, I really want the do it my self.

how do you think I should approach this. Also think, I am not taking any pay on these other than materials. I want them to range in the $10-$20 so I am looking at wal-mart tartan.

I have not made a kilt before, but I have a good idea of how, and these are not going to be the highest quality, I am talking like 15 to 20 1inch knife pleats and and then measured to your size with the pleats centered in your back side. then snip off the end and sew up the velcrow.

I think that this will work, I am not 100% though.

oh, and keep in mind that I will have around 20-25 to do.

    OR-

should I just recommend that everyone goes and gets a still water thrifty kilt?

I have a still water economy and I love it. but thats my though. I was thinking of looking into frugal corner as well. (for a finished kilt not fabric)

    what are your thoughts?

Will they be able to hand that kind of a volume of the same thrifty kilt? I know that they keep a small stock on hand.

The Man to ask is Jerry! Give him an email and see what he can do for you. Also have you thought about accessories sporrans, hose, flashes, and such?

    Cheers

I have thought of the accessories part, sporrans would really be the only really needed part. Hose, we march on a parking lot for everything except games and competitions and regular socks are very much better than knee highs in the heat. without hose, who needs flashes? really I have some, and I don't have any real hose. I just look like an idiot.

now here is the cool part, for kilt pins, I got this idea.
I have a source for rare earth magnets at a pretty good price. now if I ordered everyone a wire trombone magnet like this:
and then just a rare earth on the underside of the outer apron.

I am really surprised too, the rest of the section is really stoked about it.

I agree on the SWK Thrifty's. they list 5 tartans, all of which would be awesome for a group.

That's a wonderful idea. You must have a good sized band, with that many 'bones.

Just email them, Jerry will work with you! .

Right now, the ones with the most sizes listed are probably the best bet: Irish National shows from Small to XXX. But figure up everyone's sizes, and then ask Jerry what the supply line looks like.

Do you have a band camp this summer, or is August the target date? If you have a month to play with, he can probably cover you just fine.

Yes, well the 'bones have esprit, if anyone does, don't they? But you have a very cool section.

you know fluter, hehe. I find that when the band is sitting in our infield stands waiting in the cold night to play, who is it that does the pep cheers? well thats me, I have that kind of reputation. I actually taught the entire band a cheer, (248 members strong) when I run down the field with my slide raised in the air, the band yells freedom.

I have lots of fun. and I love the section I am in, we've always been the most fun! actually; here is our section shirt from last year:

it was a "Braveheart" theme. mostly the reason I got my first kilt, I wanted to be the best decked out bone. I am also a history nerd though thats why I kept looking into it and it became more of a kilt hobby for me

I have one of those magnets that I want to use and I have tried it out, with a rare earth on the back its going NOWHERE, and I love the magnets way of not harming my outer apron.
