First real public wearing...

As an older fart, I had an appointment with the urologist at the VA Center in Phoenix today. As this was a rather rude examination, see scope, I was deciding what would be appropriate attair for such an avent; a KILT of course! Only one thing, I had not really worn the kilt in public except for close walks with the dog in the neighborhood. Used a tip that I picked up on this forum abought using a towel to keep the pleats from getting wrinkled while driving; its a 2 hour drive to Phoenix. Very comfortable drive I must say. Got up the nerve to exit the car in the parking lot and ventured into what I knew would be the inevitable flurry of snickers and laughter. To my surprise I received nothing but possitive remarks and compliments, mostly from men. I did overhear one woman asking her husband what was worn under the kilt and he responded, "... don't you dare ask!...". After completing checking in at the clinic I turned around to take my seat in the waiting room as the receptionist called my name out as if I had forgotten something and said, "...I just wanted you to turn around so I could get a better look at your kilt...". This combined with an all clear from the doctor had to be one of my best days.

My wife works at the local VA clinic, as well as being a disabled Viet Nam vet, and since I have every other Friday off, it is my custom to bring her lunch on those days. Guess what I generally wear? Nothing but good comments from the staff and other patients. One of the nurses always calls it a skirt but that is because I got her husband into wearing one and she gives us both a hard time (goodnaturedly).

Glad you had a good day! I find that most vets appreciate the spirit of the kilt. I speculate there are many reasons for the appreciation of the kilt by vets but I think the primary one is that vets don't give a rats behind what others might think. As a Marine, I had the best in the world try to break my spirit and my body, if they couldn't do it, some runt with his hat on sideways and pants around his knees isn't going to have a much clout with me

Glad to hear the clinic appointment went well.

Indeed, the first time I went kilted in public I expected to be laughed at. Instead, I received nothing but positive remarks and a few "where can I get a kilt?" questions.

Many of us wear a kilt as our daily attire, and as you found out it's you get many compliments. It's really a non-issue. Another benefit is all the conversations you will have with people because of the kilt.
