International Talk Like a Pirate Day
It's today, Sept. 19th.
So,get ready for the REALLY bad impressions of Robert Newton's Long John Silver and Barbosa from "Pirates of the Caribbean" (itself an impression of Newton).
I'll be wearing a pirate-themed T-shirt today and be a "kilted pirate."

With all due respect, the pinnacle of pirate parlance and pronunciation was no other than Robert Newton.

Mr. Newton is etched on my memory since the show was run a whole lot when I was a youngster. I believe that he set the standard for pirate talkin'.
But one of my favorite lines from a pirate movie remains James Mason's rebuke to the boarding pirates from Yellowbeard: "One pet per pirate; parrots preferred."

Wow -- a whole site dedicated to Robert Newton! I can't wait to show my Dad!
Not to hijack the thread, but my all-time favourite Robert Newton movie is this one:

But he will always be Long John Silver to me.

I meant Newton. I'm not sure where I got "Lawsen" from.
To many, Newton's LJS and Blackbeard impressions are THE "classic" pirate imitated by almost EVERYONE.

grog!
Ironically, "grog" is the word for the day on wordsmith:
This week's theme: fabric words used metaphorically.
grog (grog) noun
1. An alcoholic drink, especially rum diluted with water.
2. Any strong alcoholic drink.
[After Old Grog, nickname of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), who ordered
diluted rum to be served to his sailors. The admiral earned the nickname from
his habit of wearing a grogram cloak. Grogram is a coarse fabric of silk,
wool, mohair, or a blend of them. The word grogram is from French gros grain
(large grain or texture).]
Today's word in Visual Thesaurus: http://visualthesaurus.com/?w1=grog
I wonder why they picked that one?
Here's another web site worth perusing this day:

Splice the main brace, me hearties!

The topic of "grog"came up on a pirate forum of which I am a member. Someone cited a reference to grog for drinking before Admiral Vernon. I'll see if I can find the reference. The "Old Grog" story is the common one for the source of the term Grog.

Never heard that before...interesting. The best source, INMHO, is the book Nelson's Blood: the story of naval rum by A.J. Pack.

In a democracy it's your vote that counts; in feudalism, it's your Count that votes.
