Touring Charleston

My lovely bride and I just spent a week in Charleston. We left on the 2nd and returned on the 8th. 7 wonderful days without a pair of "those tubular things" in evidence.
We took all the tours, walked all over the city, shopped where we pleased, visited all manner of restaurants (including Hyman's {I don't recommend them, but for quality, not anything bad that happened}).

We stayed at the Ocean Inn on the Isle of Palms. Nice and friendly, but not fancy. During the entire time I heard not one negative comment. of course how are you going to comment negatively to a man in the tartan of the USMC? The folks at the Old Customs House were especially enthusiastic. Our guide was a retired history teacher, who, when I mentioned that I was a part of Charleston History looked quizzical. I explained that I was a pallbearer for the sailor from N.C. who died on the C.S.S. Hunley. The hairs on her arms literally---no kidding--- stood straight up and I thought she was going to faint. I was ready to give her an autograph, but she stopped short of asking. The following day while on a walking tour we went by there again and some of the staff were on the front elevated entrance. They asked all manner of questions about the tartan and had nothing but good things to say.

Afternoons and evenings were spent on the beach. The wife soaking up the sun, and me in my Marpat PK sweeping the sand with my metal detector. Of the dozen or so who approached me only one asked about the kilt. The others wanted to know about metal detectors and did they actually work, and how do they work, and so forth. (In the last 9 years I have found over $4500 worth with my White's 6000 DI Pro SL so I guess they work pretty well once you learn to run them). The wife later told me that an older couple walked by her and he was telling his wife, "That's a kilt. Yessir, that's what that is: a kilt."

Every where we went the reactions were virtually the same. That is to say no reaction at all, or smiling positive comments. The only touchy time was the boat ride out to Fort Sumter and back. Lots of wind. Had to be very careful.

And I never got 'the question'.

Yes sir. The power of the kilt. Ya gotta love it.

Glad you had fun. And yes its windy on the water. Especially on top Fort Sumter. I was able to help fold the flag at the end of the day. It was an awesome experience.
