Pewter Sgian Dubh Kilt Pins in Three Flavors

When I finished work early and had a late next day start scheduled I decided to make something special. I had a lot of bits of leftover antler, ivory and Arizona ironwood from a fortnight of sgian dubh building.

I started with some 6061T6 aircraft aluminum and a bit of moose antler and shaped it until it was pleasing to my eye.

A little filework and the prototype was ready for investing.

After making one disaster and two good investments I was ready to pour some. Here is a hot one, newly hatched.

After getting two more good ones I was ready to clean them up for some inlay work.

So I used my prototype moose antler piece, a scrap of ivory and some nicely grained Arizona ironwood.

A little acrylic on a cotton swab sealed the inlays nicely and brought out the grain on the ironwood.

Some flux, solder, and a mini torch got the pins attached. Finished, they measure a little over 3" (the tartan is 2" between the dark lines) and .5" wide. They weigh exactly one ounce.

The next ones will be in agate, granite, and jade when I fire up the diamond saw.

I use a vinylpolysiloxane elastomer. You can see it in some of my previous DIY threads.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I am happy with the preliminary results. Unfortunately my pewter burner ran out of gas yesterday so I used my kitchen stove and my butane torch. I was too obsessed to stop without getting something useable finished. On little items you need more heat to get a good pour. I'll probably turn out another set tonight and see which ones I like better.
