Mr. December
I made Mr. December in the Nevada Scottish Clans Calender. The jacket I am wearing in an (authorized) altered US Army service coat. The kilt is an old 6th Army band kilt. They went defunct in 1961. They were based out of the Presidio of San Francisco. The 91st Div pipe band inherited their gear and I was privelaged enough to inherit this kilt.

Tell me more about this Authorized altered US Army Service coat. Can't afford it this year, but next year I'd like to wear a kilt with my uniform at a winter formal. Obviously, there's absolutely nothing in AR 670-1 regarding kilts.

Looks like it could be a nice pic. It appears that you've posted the thumbnail, try going one click further (he says with an air as if to say as if he's got a clue of how to do it).

The pic is too big of dpi, it will link now to the page in a larger form. I got the jacket altered and a General approved. I've piped so much that nobody says much about what I do. They bought me pipes and a kilt as well as paying for getting the kilt altered. They also bought me a mess dress jacket for more formal functions. I maintain contact with a number of pipers in the army from guard/active/and reserv, then compare notes. Then I go to whomever happens to be in charge of the honor guard and say, "these guys have this, why can't I?" It works MOST of the time.

Hmm. I don't pipe. Unfortunate. But I do play flute. Sort of.
Maybe I could get away with it if I promised to play "Caissons." Bunch of drunk Artillery Officers and Senior NCOs won't know whether it's being played badly or not. We don't hear very well anyway.

Hey Kilted in Seattle, are you with the 81st? If so, we deployed at the same time, I would have been on North Fort with you guys. Mar 04-Mar 05.

Nope, I'm with the 41st out of Oregon.
I'd been with my current unit of 6 years both as an NCO and an Officer. When I took a job in Seattle, I thought about transferring to the 81st. But they couldn't offer me anything I didn't already have and the closest unit was only 40 miles north of my current unit.
In short, they couldn't make a compelling argument for me to leave the soldiers who were the main reason I took a commission in the first place.
The last time I was in that region was shortly after Desert Storm. Sometimes it's kinda funny being a 40-year-old 1LT who has served for every president since President Reagan. I knew my current and previous battery commanders as privates. In fact, my current commander used was one of my soldiers about 10 years ago.
Only in the Guard.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the CA and OR National Guards had pipe bands at one point, but now I don't remember the source.
Does the 7th Cav still maintain its pipers?
Various Scottish groups in NY were pushing the Gov. to reinstate the 79th NY Highlanders from Civil War days with updated Highland kit, but to my knowledge, nothing has been done with it. If the Irish get the 69th, then the Scots should too! ![Wink](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
