    Speaking of sporran chains...

The thread on formal sporran chains has jumpstarted my own sporran chain project. I went out last night and aquired a Goodwill store belt that looks nice.

All I need to know now is a couple lengths. First, I need to know the average length of each side of the sporran chain, and the average lengths of each side of the strap.

I'm going to start weaving the chainmail chain tomorrow, and will do the leather work as soon as that is done. Photos will follow, and will be posted here.

    O.K.
    Average sporran chains...
Side with the buckle on it: Leather - 7" .... Chain -12.5"
    Side without buckle: Leather - 14" .... Chain - 12.5"

I'm excited to see how they turn out.
    Good luck!

I agree, very smart! Did you make it yourself?

Did I forge the pieces? No. Did I take bits and pieces of other things that I had stuffed in drawers and boxes for future use, and assemble them into a usable whole? Yes.

The chain has a back leather belt stolen from an old, rather cheap, sporran.
The connecting chain links are chrome links stolen from left over busted fishing lures.
The square dressy links are from an old, flea market find, Masonic collar, cost $3.00.
The individual parts are cheap, pot metal, but when assembled amd worn with a PC it looks striking.
I'm a Freemason. The emblems mean something to me. I wear it to Masonic functions.

I like it, wear it seldom, and appreciate the complement.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it too.

As am I. I enjoy weaving chainmail, and the Half Persian 3:1 weave that I plan to use looks great as an ornamental item. Working with leather is equally fun. What better way to combine the 2.

I can't wait to don my Irish National SWK, my latest sporran creation, and the new sporran strap.

FYI, be on the look out for another thread from me that will have photos of my latest sporran. I'lll take those photos when I get home tomorrow morning (I'm 12 hours into a 24 hour shift right now). I'm going to go ahead and start the thread tonight just to get everyone drooling for the photos.

James... The US Navy's network has a full on block against photbucket, so I'll have to wait until the morning to see your work. I'll be sure to post comments when I post the results of my strap project.

Ok... Now that I can see the photo, I can coplement the chain James has produced.

I like it. The Masonic symbols lend themselves well to the overall appearance.
