    Kilts for kids

My son wants a kilt for Christmas. I got him one of the SWK kids kilts this summer. He's a little too big for them now. He's not tall enough for a full length kilt, and I can't afford $200 for a custom made kilt that he'll grow out of in a year. Anyone have any suggestions on where I can get him a nice kilt for a reasonable price?

Have you thought about stillwater? I don't know their quality first hand, but others say they're good for the price. And the price seems good for something he'll grow out of soon enough.

It's too bad that there's not a kilted parents forum where parents could sell outgrown children's kilts to other parents...

I have purchased children's kilts from both Sport Kilt and USA Kilts.

I own three SWK's. The adult sizes have a 24 inch drop. It would wear like a dress on him. Hmm... Childhood trauma...

Panache- I haven't looked at USA Kilts yet. Sport Kilts doesn't have the right size either. His waist is 30 inch and he needs a 15inch drop. I'll bug SportKilt and see if they can do that for me. Thanks for the idea. Sport Kilt was actually my first thought.

I don't think you are going to find an off the rack kilt that will fit your son and based on the measurements a hemmed adult kilt probably wouldn't fit that well.

A possibility that might work, until it is worth getting a custom kilt for him, is a Buzz Kidder kilt. Myself and others on the forum carry them. In your situation they have two advantages, first the length can be ordered to suit your needs so there is no hemming after the fact. Second, since the fell is on the short side, compared to other kilts, it should work very well in this situation proportion wise. Depending on the seller you should find a price less than $125. Based on your son's size requirements I don't think you will do much better. PM me if you need more info.

That's not actually true. They have a 24 inch total length. That's not the same as a 24" drop (or am I wrong?). In any case, I just ordered an adult SWK for Red_Raven_Studios' 13 year-old son. Of course he's 13 and taller than I am, with a 28 inch waist. I ordered a 30 waist, which he will grow into, and the 24 inch length should be fine on him.

How tall is your son? The larger of the SWK kids kilts is 20". Would that be too short for him?

Here is what we did for a friend of mine. He got the SWK Thrifty then before we took out the pleat tacking we put it on his son measured the length and the fell I took it home and sewed the fell to the proper length and double zig-zag stitched the length and cut off the extra and it has been washed several times now and what little bit of thread at the bottom that came lose was nipped off and it looks great. because of the Velcro waistband the only reason to get him a new one will be he wore it out. Measure the kilt high and he will wear it low KIDS....
It will be a while before it is to short unless he wears it up high (never happen) in the traditional manner.

Don't kilt makers put an extra hidden pleat in kids kilts to accommodate growth. You could also put a hem in without cutting the materias and take it out as he gets taller.

The issue here is the vertical drop, not the expanding waist and hips.
