Best hose for gardening?

Hay all, I've been doing a bit of light gardening in my canvas kilt this year. If it's warm I wear sandals, but I'm wondering what kind of hose would be best to garden in that wouldn't get ruined, or that would be easier to replace than the expencive wool hose. Would some kind of leather chaps look ok with a kilt?

I see, from my other gardening thread, that Chef still has a problem with people gardening in kilts. It's delightful to re-read String's posts... James... at least there wasn't any skinning brought up.

Moosedog, you've been talking with me about gardening all along. It feels like this thread is from years ago, and I've only been here a couple of months.

The answer to gardening hose turned out to be thick gray, acrylic, knee-high socks with a red band around the very top. I bought them at JC Penny, and they work fine.

Many a member here swear by soccor socks, although if you're wearing sandles you should probably dispense with socks altogether. Just because you're kilted doesn't mean you have to wear the 'proper' attire. With shovel in hand the kilt police won't bother you .

I've got some soccer socks, and I don't know if there is any real difference, but last week I ordered and received this week a couple pair of Rugby sox from http://www.worldrugbyshop.com/departments-socks.html Nice socks!

For me something tightly woven, partly or all-synthetic, and inexpensive (i.e. something I don't mind replacing when snagged) hence the soccer/rugby sock option. But this is when it's really cold! I am in sandals half the year, the next step "warmer " after sandals is work boots with inexpensive socks/hose scrunched down.

If I truly have to work kilted in nasty weather in brambles or poison oak I wear a pair of gaitors over heavier woolen hose.

No, no, no hose and sandals. I like the way my sandals with the ankle straps look with my kilts, slightly Roman looking. I kind of live in the cactus patch, so I'm thinking about leg protection as well, that's why I brought up chaps, or some kind of shin guards.

Grant, I will spare you the photo of me gardening while in a kilt and bright green rubber boots (Go, Ducks!)

PS Ted the gaitor thing really works...a nylon packcloth gaitor that goes from under the knee down over your boot. They are inexpensive (probably less than good pair of hose) or even easy to make at home. Actually canvas ones would work well, too.

Garden hose?


I just wear regular white cotton athletic socks, the usual above the ankle length, with work boots whenever I'm doing yard work in a kilt, like so. The boots protect my toes and ankles, and the socks can go into the wash on the uber white cycle.
