    Completed sgian dubh

I greatly enjoy making at least some of my Christmas presents for family and friends each year. My mother, while not terribly fond of my kilts, has shown a lot of appreciation for the sgian dubhs, "sgian don'ts", and dirks I have made over the last couple of years. She asked for one for herself to use as a utility knife and a belt sheath to go with it.

I had this wonderful piece of elk antler left over from way2fractious' dirk and got to work. Since this would not be worn like a traditional sgian dubh in a sock I felt free to have some fun and make something that felt good in my hand.

The bolster is a small piece of Austrailian Lacewood.

    Cheers

    Very nice.
I'd wear that even as a regular Sgian Dubh.
Love the way it turned out. Congratulations.

    Nice work.
Where did you get the blade?
Does you mother plan to use the blood groove?

    Thanks for the kind words

It is a carbon steel one from Atlanta Cutlery. They are pretty reasonably priced for someone wanted to try their hand at making one. The carbon steel will discolor very quickly if used (giving the blade a very antique appearance).
I had it sharpened at my local knife place and it putting an edge on it takes the bright finish to a satin one. It does take a nice edge though.

I just hope she doesn't hurt herself. This thing is sharp!

A very nice gift. I'm starting to really like the AC blades for general sgian use. The threaded tangs are easier to build than a full forged tang.
