    1st Homebrew Kilt

Here is the finished product of the bedticking kilt. I have a whole bolt of this stuff and it seemed reasonable to experiment with this instead of valuable wool. It is mid-weight cotton and is about 5 yards. I had been sitting on it for a while so the pleats are kind of messed up. I'm at work and I don't mind "splashage" on this one. I plan to use it for hiking so I used Velcro so as to not have straps and buckles under the waistband of the pack.
The belt is my old fire department uniform belt. The sporran is one I made for18th C. reenacting. The rest is just my work clothes. (Note to self: make sure your stockings are even)

Very interesting. It is always a good idea to use practice material for the first kilt.

Dang, that's a very impressive first effort! Any gripes, moans, bitches or complaints would be unseemly. Maybe extend the fell down some? But dang, that looks like a kilt! Good show.

Neat - you ended up with a tweed effect. It seems you have a good "knock-around" kilt.

What lessons did you learn? What will you do differntly next time?

Bit of curl on the reverse pleat but that might be from sitting on it. But heck you just banged out a perfectly good kilt on your first try. Good on ya!

Thanks for the comments. I'm going to stitch the fell down more. The reverse pleat has too much material in it. There is nothing I can do about it now but future kilts will use a narrower reverse. The pleats could use a little more taper as well. This material is pretty stiff, I washed it once before I worked it. I will need to clean it again and we'll see how it survives the washing machine. It actually works out pretty nicely at work, it gives all the biddies at town hall something to gossip (wonder) about.
