    Montrose Doublet

So I have been surfing the net in anticipation of my annual bonus. I am thinking about geting a Montrose Doublet, "mary jane" shoes, jabot, proper hose, tartan fly, etc., for formal wear. Any suggestions on from whom I could order to get the most bang for the buck, which thanks to Fed Res., Congress, and POTUS, is not worth much, would be greatly appreciated.

Probably your favorite suppliers of highland wear can order a doublet: I believe that would generally be made to measure, so their suppliers can probably do it. I'd first call the folks I usually deal with, such as Matt, Rocky, Celtic Croft --- all of whom are sponsors of xmarksthescot.com by the way. A domestic retailer may save you some hassles with shipping & customs.

If you want a one-stop deal, try sponsor kiltstore.net.

"Bang for the Buck" is a relative term to each one of us, but I would warn you about less expensive "off-the-rack" Montrose Doublets. The Montrose is the most fitted of kilt jackets and the only way to make sure you get it right is made-to-measure.

Also as much as I like my Montrose I never suggest it to someone if it will be their only formal jacket. First it is considered dressier than the PC, perfectly acceptable for white tie. Second because of the design it is a very warm jacket and not necessarily one you want to wear during warm weather.

That said, it really is a great jacket and always elicits great reviews.

Thanks for the information so far.

I have an Argylle already and think I can wear it for most occasions. The Montrosse would be strictly "white tie" formal.

By writing "Bang for the Buck" I don't mean cheap. I just don't want to be ripped off. Quality for the dollar is what I am talking about. $500 - $1,000 for the outfit I spoke of is what I am thinking of.

    J. Higgins sells one for $350, and a jabot shirt for $75.

Thanks for the information. Any dealings with them, i.e., how is their quality?

I've never dealt with them myself, but I've heard mostly good things about them from those who have.

I think you'll find a Montrose way too warm for wearing in this neck of the woods, especially if you go for a double breasted jacket. Sheriffmuir's are another option, and while not quite as warm as a Montrose, they are still pretty warm for this part of the world-- they are also the hands down most expensive jacket you can buy. I have, however, seen one made from a USMC officer's mess jacket-- it looked spectacular.

If you are looking for something more stylish than a PC, you might want to consider what used to be called a "Standard Doublet". These work well with both white and black tie, and because they have an open front, aren't nearly as hot as a Montrose.

Virrtually any supplier worth his salt should be able to supply a doublet-- there are a lot of recommendations coming your way-- check them out.

Indeed, I've only worn mine a couple of times.

Exactly, granted I wore mine a dozen or so times last year but comparatively that is light use for me. And I did not use it May through September. Too bloody warm.
