Advice Needed For First Kilt.
Hello to all. I am new to this site and kilts in general. I have family ties to a number of scottish clans and have wanted to express and learn more of my family's heritage for some time. That being said I am looking for any advice you may have to offer requarding kilt makers and kilts in general for a first buyer. I am looking to wear my kilt a few times a month informally.
Thanks in advance.

Advice needed
Angelman
Welcome to the world of kiltedness. Since you are new to this addiction, take a look at what is offered at SWK for good kilts at a very reasonable price. Also take a look at the kilts and tartans offered by USAK. They have a great line at a great price point. Both are super when it comes to service and fast delivery. Or check out Matt Newsome at the Tartan Museum for tartans in your clan and for a custom made kilt. Look at what is offered and then match up your tartan to the company. Follow their measuring directions and you'll be kilted in no time. Check out the Tartan Ferret to find your tartan or Tartans By Air. Good luck and welcome!

WELCOME from Flint, Michigan!! Stillwater Kilts are inexpensive and a great introduction to kilting (or, even more than "an intro" for those who so choose!)!

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Stillwater kilts is the best place to buy your first kilt, BAR NONE. It is also a great place to buy everyday use kilts. The biggest drawback to SWK is tartan choice. But service, price, and value have made me a repeat customer.
I must say that I am 4 kilts into this obsession and I am now thinking of progressing up to a USA Kilt. More tartans to choose from, better quality, but higher price. As everyone here says, though; the more you buy, the more and better quality you want.
Good luck, and happy kilting.

Hello and From a cloudy and unusally warm St. Louis, Mo.
For me I had a limited budget when I got my first kilt and went with one from Stillwater Kilts, So that could be one way to go.

ANGELMAN,
It would be helpful if you told us where you live (UK, USA, Canada, elsewhere).
Also, what price range are you considering?

My first was a Amerikilt i purchased long before i knew much about the others.I liked it an soon bought another.
Pretty much casual kilts and only come in about five different solid colors.
My third was an Irish National from Stillwater Kilts.Very nice formal, and very reasonable price.
My fourth an fifth were kilts i made myself, and did'nt turn out to bad for my first try.
I plan on ordering an American Heritage and a US Army kilt from USA kilts if Rocky ever gets back from where ever hes hiding out.LOL
Seems i read they won't be processing orders until after the 25th of January.
I think you can still order, but i'm going to wait untill next month. No hurry anyway, but would like to get them before spring break.
I would listen to the advice of these great guys in here before you make your decision on what you want to purchase.
I also like using KiltDay.com for links to good Kilt sites.
Saves you from searching all over the web.
Thats where i came across this great group and i'm glad i did.

Welcome to the Rabble!
from Rainy Southern California
You didn't give us enough information to allow us to help you.
Where are you?
What, if any, clan do you have ties to?
How old are you?
What do you do for a living?
These (and many other factors) all impact on what to get as a first kilt.

THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK THUS FAR. TO TELL YOU MORE ABOUT ME. I LIVE NEAR LINCOLN, NE HERE IN THE USA. I AM 35 YEARS OLD, FATHER OF 4 AGES 6-12. I AM WHAT I WOULD CALL A SEMI-PROFESSIONAL. I HEAD A GENERATOR PROGRAM FOR MY COMPANY THAT I PUT TOGEHER A FEW YEARS BACK. WITH THIS JOB I SPEND A MIX OF TIME WORKING FROM MY HOME OFFICE AND TRAVELING BETWEEN OUR BRANCH LOCATIONS IN NEBRASKA, IOWA, SOUTH DAKOTA, AND MINNISOTA. I ALSO FIND MY SELF IN PORTIONS OF KANSAS AND MISSOURI FARILY OFTEN.
SOME OF THE SCOTTISH CLANS AND FAMILY NAMES IN MY TREE ARE:
ANDERSON, BRUCE, BUCHAN, CAMPBELL, DOUGLAS, DRUMMOND, DUNKELD, ERSKINE, FRASER, GIFFORD, GORDON, GRAHAM, HALYBURTON, HAMILTON, HAY, HOME, KEITH, KER, LORENS, STEWART, SETON, AND ROBERTSON.
I BEGAN LOOKING AT THE TARTAN FERRET LAST NIGHT. WITH ALL THE ABOVE FAMILIES AND THE VAIRIOUS CHOICES OUT THERE. THIS WILL NOT BE AN EASY DECISION. DOES ANYONE HAVE A RECOMENDATION FOR ANY OF THE FAMILIES ABOVE?
ALSO I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR PERSONALLY FROM ANY OF YOU.

ONE QUESTION RAISED WAS IN REGUARD TO COST. ALL THOUGH I WORK EVERY DAY TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY AND WAY OF LIFE. (LIKE MOST ALL I KNOW) I WANT TO BASE MY DECISION ON QUALITY, STYLE, AND FIT MORE SO THAN COST. IF A QUALITY FIRST KILT CAN BE HAD FOR $250.00 THAT'S WHAT I NEED TO LOOK AT IF I NEED TO SPEND $500.00 TO GET THE BALANCE OF COST, QUALITY, FIT, AND STYLE THEN THAT IS WHAT I AM PREPARED TO DO.
THANKS TO ALL.
