    The Hakas vs. Scotland

Don't know if anyone's ever seen this before...maybe you have, maybe you haven't...but I was just introduced to it to-night. It's a commercial of the Hakas vs. Scotland: Video

    Enjoy and cheers.

Yes, all those ads have been posted from time to time. My favorite is the one with Sharon Stone. Worth searching for.

    Best regards,

This haka was drawn up by fans on a tour of NZ about 12 years ago.

Kamoa ntheny ara dgeyey ara dgeyey
(extebd both arms in hands in gesture of welcome)

    Hin kye rhard dorsu mfin
    (repeat welcome)

    Ahm nosca redy yoo
    (sneer, shake fist at adversary)

    Naechib soarat but eh
    (cancelling motion with right hand)

    jis tafu kinpa gger
    (shake fist again)

    Yatu beye
(gob in general direction of opponent)

Auso rrypa la wizon lyjo kin
(make a placatory gesture and back off gingerly)

    Think it might catch on??

(BTW no offense is meant to the nation of New Zealand or its cultural and native history or traditions that i have the highest respect for).

Before the last post chaffs someone's hide, let's examine the Haka: It is a traditional warrior chant praying for success in battle and safe passage to the after life. Many Hakas also call for the death and dismemberment of the one's enemies. It was tradition for Maori warriors to eat the brains of their enemies in order to capture their life-force and honor the fallen enemy.

Here's an example of a traditional Haka:

Ka mate, ka mate! ka ora! ka ora! ’Tis death! ‘tis death! (or: I may die) ’Tis life! ‘tis life! (or: I may live)

Ka mate! ka mate! ka ora! ka ora! ’Tis death! ‘tis death! ’Tis life! ‘tis life!

Tēnei te tangata pūhuruhuru This the hairy man that stands here...

Nāna nei i tiki mai whakawhiti te rā …who brought the sun and caused it to shine

Ā, upane! ka upane! A step upward, another step upward!

Ā, upane, ka upane, whiti te ra! A step upward, another... the Sun shines!

PS: the "hairy man" is most likely a reference to Maui....the polynesian creator god.

OK, now to the All-Blacks: they have a similar Haka chant that is far more benign than traditional warrior chants and generally is not too different from a cheerleader chant that one would hear in an American football game. Here's a reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka_of_the_All_Blacks
