When i first started buying things from Britain I'd receive brown paper parcels with a bunch stamps and cancellation marks from the mailman or packages tossed on the porch by the UPS guy. I loved that. And the dogs loved barking at the Big Brown Truck.

And no bonus handling fees.

Then i ordered thru the Kiltstore (great selection and prices) and got the Fedex bill and learned a lesson.

So the last time i ordered a kilt from the Kiltstore i choose the "free shipping" with a note to ship via Royal Mail. "I'm in no hurry", i said in the note.

When they sent the shipping confirmation i prepared for a wait of several weeks.

The kilt arrived two days later via Fedex. And the Fedex bill several weeks later.

When I asked the Kiltstore why, they said they couldn't insure packages sent thru the mail, or something like that.

So now my question is to those of you who have successful deliveries to the US via Royal Mail, what wording did you use in your notes?

Iv learned a whole lot since I ordered my first tank from them. Now I know that they don't have anything, that cant be gotten wright here at home. I will never order from them again not because I have a problem with them, I don't I was very happy with the kilt and the service. Iv just learned that FedEx will hit you over the head.

Stick with the mail or UPS and be sure to demand "No Fedex." I think I had to pay about $45 import duty 10 years ago--or someting like that. I am old and don't remember the details.

I would specify, that if this item can not be shipped via Royal mail, please inform me of this so that I may order from another supplier, and if it arrives via FEDEX, I will not accept the package.

FedEx, as a courier, is GREAT! I'd always send an important international document via FedEx over any other service. It's fast, reliable, and the tracking is far better than any other service in my experiences.

'FedEx Trade Networks' (rather than FedEx the courier) is the problem. They are the arm of FedEx that processes the duties on parcels. FTN always applies the statutory duties, even in marginal cases, and has a high fixed processing fee. If you are a business then FTN works well, and the fixed fee tends to be small versus the commercial volumes, but that fee is much too high for private users.

National postal services not only have low processing fees, but they universally seem very inefficient at collecting the duties they should be collecting -- which makes them quite advantageous to private buyers.

Hmm. I've read the same complaint so many times. You'd think they'd get the message. These issues factor in when deciding whom to purchase from.
