Need a Kilt for the outdoors
Hi all, I am looking for my first kilt, and want to be wearing it in the great outdoors. I am a avid Scoutleader so I will wearing it camping, hiking and backpacking. Since there will be boys around some type of modesty device likes UK's would be nice. I like their Survivor model, but choke on the price. Now don't get me wrong I know you get what you pay for, but not my first one please. BK's look nice but I don't know whether any modesty loop-d-loop thingy can be had. I prefer non tradition style and solid colors.
I have lurking here for a month and know that I get the best advise

MM from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, If you are looking for a non traditional kilt, you might want to look at Freedom Kilts. Steve is a Sponsor and member here and by all accounts is wonderful to work with. I know you say not for your first one regarding the whole you get what you pay for thing, however it really is true and if you do go for top quality in your budget it could well last you the rest of your life.

Welcome to the Rabble!
from Sunny Southern California.
You will be surprized what wool can do. But we have several good advertisers that can get you a casual kilt that will let you try out the experience. Look at the advertisers section, and do some surfing.

Hey Muffinman
Welcome from the Western Slope!!
I too am a Scout Leader (Unit Commisioner) and wear my kilts camping with the Scouts( Camp-o-rees and Summer Camps). I also wear them hiking and trekking out and around here. When going to Scout functions I usually wear my SWK MacLaren standard. I also have another Black Watch for some Scout functions, but primarily for just hiking around. I also have a couple from Frugal Corner for hiking and fly fishing around here. All of the kilts are evenly priced, great for a person on a budget, and fit awfully darn well. SWK is famous for it's customer service and quality product and FC has some different tartans, and both companies have ones in solid colors. Either one plus many others talked about here would be great. The folks here are more than willing to share ideas with you.

Still Water Kilts are good too.
www.stillwaterkilts.com
At $80.00 plus shipping, not bad for a 1st kilt
I have 3 SWK's and VERY happy with the product.
On the other hand, I do believe that the Scouts have
their own tartan. Several tartan finders are available.
SWK will not make a kilt from your own material. Other
kilt makers will. You might want the BSA tartan as one
of your kilts. The SWK stillwalker is a great neutral kilt.
Also it would be good as a starter kilt. Wear just about
anything with it. It is good for 'the outdoors'.
OK--Just my $.02 worth.

You might try Alphakilts too. They are having a sale right now until 2/9 - all their knife-pleat models are $99. Reportedly, these are very well made. I ordered a pre-production black box pleat, the last one they are making befor they go into production.
A good color selection too.

Welcome Neighbor,
What parta the state you in? We got us a lot of Zonies on board here, that's for sure.
Not sure what all vendors are gonna be at the Highland games Feb 23, 24, but that's a good time to eyeball a lotta kilts, both at the vendors and on the guys wandering around.

All my kilts work outdoors, pics in my gallery if that helps any. If you're in the hot part of the state a nice knockaround kilt is the Utilikilts original.
Not sure why you need modesty snaps. When I'm gonna be at work or around kids I just wear black underwear.
When I'm up in the mountains around pitchy trees I wear my Utilikilts original camo - just in case I get pitch on it won't show so bad...maybe improve the camo.

If you want a low priced non-traditional, you might want to consider alphakilts. They're quite affordable compared to the competition, and I've heard nothing but good things. Just ordered one for myself actually, as they'll be raising their prices on the 9th.
edit: crap, beat me to it.
