an unfortunate fold
Looking for some advice. When I wear my 5 yrd wool kilt, it gets a fold or bump or roll in a most unfortunate place, well just above the sporran. It seems to go from hip to hip along the apron. I have noticed this fold in some but not all of the pictures posted here and so know I am not alone. Any ideas what causes this and what can be done to prevent it?

Is your sporran strap too tight?

Sounds like the lower of the two kilt straps might be too tight. I've noticed that myself and loosened it, and it seems to be better. Hope that helps.

hmmm. I only have a single strap, but maybe the sporran strap is too tight, I did have someone tell me it should be lower....a matter of comfort though.

Generally, or so I've always worn it, it should be superpubic. You don't want to wear it too low. But it shouldn't be tight enough to bunch your kilt up, either. Alternatively, if you have your sporran strap through the belt loops on the back of your kilt (I'm assuming you have them) you might want to not do that anymore, so that the whole thing rides a bit differently.

The sporran should ride about three to four fingers below your belt.

Keep the under apron strap tight, loosen off the over apron strap.
What happens when you pull the front of the waistband up? does the fold go away?
The height of the sporran is another factor and has been addressed here. the four finger rule below the belt when worn at your true waist.

There could be three things that are causing the pucker of your front apron.
The first is the right hip strap too tight. But you said you only have two straps so that's not it.
The second is the sporran too low. To check this take off the sporran and see if the pucker is still there. If not, put the sporran back on and see if it is pulling the apron up. If the apron hem is not laying flat and even then the sporran is probably too low. All the advice about finger width below the belt only works if the kilt is worn at Traditional height. If your not wearing the kilt at the proper height sually raising the sporran right up under the belt buckle helps. The idea is that the sporran should hang free from your hips. Not be tucked under your stomach.
The third thing that will cause pucker is wearing the kilt too low. If you have a Traditional Cut Kilt the waistband straps should be snugged into your natural waist. That is right under your ribcage at the sides.
Wearing a Traditional Kilt too low combined with a bit of stomach is guaranteed to cause the dreaded apron pucker. At the least, the kilt should be worn over the stomach with the apron hanging straight down in front.
Try these ideas and see if it helps. If not post a picture of yourself here and we will have a better idea on how to advise.

Actually Steve I have to disagree with you here. It can happen when the right top strap or single right strap is too tight. By snugging up the under apron of the kilt is what actually holds the kilt up. The over apron can be attached without any stress on the strap or front apron.
I agree with your other observations.
