    hunting-style sporrans

I've been thinking of a brown leather hunting style sporran for a while, and there seems to be noticeable difference in the average costs for sporrans with a flap (such as a Rob Roy style) and sporrans with hunting style cantles. This is even true if the cantle is leather, and there is not a chrome, pewter, or other metal cantle. Also true with comparable levels of quality.

So I'm curious what accounts for this. I assume it's got something to do with the ease or cost of production. Are hunting style one's harder to make than ones with a flap? Are they just more appealing and so price reflects demand? Whether I make one or buy one, I'm curious about the difference. You sporran makers probably have great info. Hope I'm not asking for trade secrets!

If you need a 7/16" bolt and go into the hardware store it will cost you $.08. If you mistakenly walk into a boat and marine store that same bolt will cost you $3.96.

If you want to polish your car you can get turtle wax for a couple of dollars, buy the same stuff but with Bentley on the label and you'll faint.

It seems that if it is for a kilt the price is set by whatever the traffic will bear.
As more people start to wear the kilt more, accessory makers will be able to make a living and the price will come down. Until then we are stuck.

Leaving aside the quality issue a "Dress" sporran will alway be priced higher than a "Semi-Dress" sporran. And the fancier it looks the higher the price.

Do what I did this week and order a Ferguson Britt sporran fancy as fancy can be, yet still suitable for casual wear, hand made, very expensive, but something your grandkids can inherit =P You just dont get good handmade quality like that anymore.

    (yeah i'm jonsing!)

I have a bit more trouble when making a hunter style sporran, but, then again I haven't made that many of them. I think most of them just look at what everyone else is charging and follow along!
