Going to a wedding.
Hey all,
I'm going to a wedding this August and intend on going kilted. I plan on wearing my ancient Grant Hunting (aka Black Watch) kilt as it's more subdued that my modern Grant. I'm using this as excuse to buy a kilt jacket and was thinking that I'd get a charcoal tweed Braemar jacket and vest from USAK. Is this jacket formal enough to wear to a wedding (as a guest)? I'm not overly fond of the standard black argyle jacket and want a jacket that will look good with both kilts.
Also, what colour of shirt and tie do you think would go good with the charcoal tweed and ancient Black Watch tartan? My wife will be wearing a blue dress(she's a bridesmaid) so I'm thinking maybe something that might compliment her dress.
Let me know what you think?

White shirt & a dark blue tie would go well with your kilt, & yes, the Braemar jacket would be fine for the wedding.

White shirt is a must. Here in Scotland an "Argyll type" jacket of varying shades of brown, green, blue, and black tweed are seen worn by wedding guests.Don't forget that the black barathea, silver buttoned Argyll is the most formal daywear jacket there is,equivelant to the morning coat.Have fun.

The Charcoal Braemar or Argyll would be perfectly fine as a guest at a wedding, I would say White Shirt with either a Blue or Green tie.

I think the charcoal jacket will look great. I will probably get one myself when I can afford it.
I know it breaks "the rules," but I'm a big fan of wearing a tie in the same tartan as the kilt. I think the waistcoat creates enough distance between the tartans that it makes up for any differences in color, sett size, etc. I've worn a tartan tie with my kilt to a few weddings and other casual/semi-formal occasions, and no one has ever said a thing.

Thanks guys. White shirt it will be. Now what do you think about hose colour? I know the convention is that the shirt and hose should match, but is this necessary if a jacket and waistcoast are being worn, not much of the shirt shows? I have off-white, black, and dark green (two pairs with different shades) and could probably borrow my brother's Lovatt blue hose.
Oh, and... ghillie or regular brogues? I have both. Probably regular, eh?

Sorry, I don't know about these things, but is the hose matching the shirt a real convention? What is the different between ghillie and regular brogues?

It's often been said here that it looks good to match the hose with the color of the shirt. However, as has been said, if you wear a jacket much of the shirt is covered. I like to match my hose with my jacket. Both should be toned to coordinate with the kilt.
I find the having the hose matching the dominant color on the torso sort of frames the kilt.
And of course, this is not a "rule". It is one way to present a coordinated and balanced appearance.

Thanks, Dave. I guess I hadn't noticed those threads among the many topics of interest on here. It might be irrelevant, since this convention leaves me wearing either black or white hose to go either with my black Argyll (barathea?) or a plain dress shirt.
Lucky for me I tend to go more casual when I'm kilted.

I'm quite fond of wearing black hose when I have on a black jacket.
