Matheson Tartan
So I'm almost done a storm blue sporran I've been making, and the next thing on my list of projects is a dress similar to this one. So in the next six months or so, I'll be drafting, marking, creating, etc. However, the issue is this: I can't find Matheson hunting tartan for less than $43 a yard. I'm a broke *** college student, and five yards @ $43 a yard is way the hell out of my range. Any suggestions? The only other option at the moment is going with the Mciver tartan, which is my dad's family, however I'd rather honor my moms family. Also, I look awful in red.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

As a fellow Matheson, I'd love to give you some advice, but I've had the same experience.
Welcome, though!

Welcome fellow clansperson from Fort Worth! I have a Matheson modern red kilt. I don't find that the red overpowers the blues and greens. Even so, I'd love to get a Matheson hunting tartan one day.

My father has a red Matheson kilt from his younger days (many inches ago) when he was playing solos as a young piper. I find it a bit busy for my tastes, but I might get one some day.

Keep an eye on eBay. You can get 10 oz (Dressmaker/Highland dance weight) for about $25-30 per yard (double width), but you usually have to buy a kilt length.

Many of us find ourselves in this situation. It's because not all tartans are available in alternative weaves....lighter weights, alternative fabrics and so on. Sometimes you're just stuck, and ya gotta pay the price for the heavyweight stuff.

Well, thank you for the welcomes. I guess I will do the ebay thing, although my mom is headed back to Scotland next summer and may snag some for me as well
