the unseemly question
OK, I'm not accosting anyone here just trying get a sense of what's what. I probably should set up a poll...
When wearing a traditional wool, tartan kilt, is it more "proper," or more common to go "regimental" or not?
Someone...a long time friend of mine and one who has worn the kilt for many years...mentioned something about "hygiene." And then there's the issue of chafing.
I'm kind of two minds about the whole issue. I have no qualms about it either way but I don't care to be one of those fellers who is "shod in the cradle and barefit in the stubble."

There are some circumstances where I will not go regimental like volunteering in a high school.

It depends on two things for me- the weather and the kilt. If I'm wearing my Amerikilt, which has a habit coming up when I sit down, then reg is a bad thing. Same with my Sport Kilt, which is really light and blows up easily in a stiff wind. So better to be... shall we say... underprepared?
So in reference to the weather issue- if it's really hot, I'll wear undies. Chafing is not fun. I made the mistake of wearing a 13 oz wool kilt to a festival last summer. The day got to almost 110F, I was miserable, and actually for the first time in my life left a festival early as a result. That was terrible and I learned my lesson. There are times when reg is just not a good idea. However, when I see Nightwish in two weeks, I fully intend to go reg, and I will have my wife draw one shamrock on each cheek and write in big green letters "Kiss my Irish a**" just in case someone there thinks it funny to do a kilt check.
Otherwise, with my traditional kilts, it's regimental. The simple fact is that it's much more comfortable.

Only if I'm going to be around small children - who naturallytend to look up(!) do I wear black briefs.

I would like to go regimental, but was told by a policeman that if the wind caused the kilt to fly up and a part of me was exposed that shouldn't be, I would be arrested - and the wind can be unpredictable here.

I have a very jealous wife who mandates that I at least wear black boxer/briefs under my kilts. And you know, I love enough to make that all worth while. I might try reg around the house sometime, but not yet.

In reality, it is a personal choice depending upon one's comfort level outside of the military.

There should have been one more option: It depends on the occasion. For instance, if there will be a lot children around or other sensitive individuals, and the risk of exposure is great.
