Not quite the way it happened! As his army broke up, Charles actually tried to rally the remnants for one last charge, even offering to dismount and lead them personally. He shouted "Rally, in the name of God! Pray, gentlemen, return!" His staff and those others around him convinced him of the futility of this and lead him away from the field.
Charles' personal courage was never at doubt, only his leadership skills and judgement...!
