New From the Western Hills in Maine

Hi all, I think I had signed up here a long while ago, but I can't find the info so I've signed up again for the first time.

I've attended Highland games in Maine/NH for many many years and always wore a belted plaid (MacDonald weathered).

In late 2003 I bought my first original Utilikilt (black used) and since have picked up several more kilts for warm weather wear...an urban camo original, Mockers in black, tan and heather gray (soon olive) a basil survival (since sold), a cheap generic polyviscose 'kilt' in modern MacDonald while visiting the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and most recently a Stillwater HW Black 'shadow tartan' for more formal wear.

I wear kilts for comfort which means that they usually get put up when the cold Maine winds and snow begin to fly. I realise that some kilted men wear them in all sorts of weather regardless and I admire that, but I choose comfort and am not comfortable with my scrotum dragging in the snow. I wear underwear with my kilts because again, that's how I'm most comfortable...with that support. Unless it is REALLY hot, I usually wear Canadian Military Mountain boots with heavy socks and an antique (functional and not all that decorative) sgian dubh in my right boot.

I usually wear a sporran even with my UK Mockers (which have nice front pockets) because I don't like bulky stuff in my front pockets, I'm not a huge fan of the 'cargo type' pockets and the sporran keeps my front apron from flying up and it helps reiterate to the clueless who may otherwise be worried about it that I'm wearing a man's kilt/skirt not a ladies skirt.

I've a cheap Chinese made 'sporran' (which I got with the polyviscose 'kilt' in Scotland in 2004), a silver fox sporan which I made from a fox tha tmy dad trapped , skinned and tanned (no face, just nice fur), a Buzz Kidder "Inverness" sporran and the nice hand tooled sporran that I mentioned in the thread here.

I've been on the Yahoo UK list for several years posting as "Michael in Maine" and look forward to this list too as a resource and place for friendly like minded exchange.

Welcome from Albany, NY. I lived in Kennebunkport, Maine a few years ago while attending boatbuilding school. I really miss it. Maine is a beautiful state.
