    Masterpiece Theater- "Kidnapped"

    Check out your local public television station for Masterepiece Theater. They are airing Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. Thoroughly enjoyable!

    Here's a brief description from their website:
    Iain Glen (Kingdom of Heaven, Wives & Daughters) stars as Scottish hero Alan Breck in Robert Louis Stevensons ripping yarn for young and old alike. James Anthony Pearson is Davie Balfour, the boy who is kidnapped on a swashbuckling adventure set after the Scottish rebellion against England in the mid-1700s.

    It's really good! I'm watching episode 2 now.

    Is this a re-run of the one that was made a few years ago?

    I liked it very much except for trying to make the Long Mile Gang the Uruk Hai!

    Cheers

    Saw the Masterpiece Theatre one...did the Alan Breck in that one seem a little Panache-ish or am I just projecting?

    I subsequently caught the Armand Assante as Alan version on ION TV one evening and thought that it was pretty damn good, too. My daughter found the VHS of that one at the dollar store for...well, a dollar...but it's been sitting here in the shrink wrap as we haven't had time to fit ti inbto the viewing schedule. The Assante verion also boasts the presences of Brendan Gleeson, Brian Blessed and Patrick Malahide.

    Why my very favorite part of the book is after the fight aboard ship when Alan Breck carefully brushes his coat clean and happily sings a song in praise of himself!

    Cheers

    My father read this RLS tale to me as a kid, so you can imagine it's one of my favorite stories involving Scotland. I also reread the book as an adult. As such, I have four different movie/TV versions:

    • 1960 Walt Disney version - with Peter Finch as Alan Breck Stewart;
    • 1971 version - with Michael Caine as ABS;
    • 1977 British TV version - with David MacCallum as ABS;
    • 1995 F. F. Coppola version - with Armand Assante as ABS.

    The British TV version was difficult to find. I got it in PAL tape format and had it converted to dvd. Anyone who is a fan of NCIS may remember that a couple of seasons ago Armand Assante and MacCallum (two Alans!) shared a scene together. Fortunately, the universe did not blow up.

    So, was this MT version a new production?

    Ahhh...Just found out that it first aired in 2005.

    It's new for me though as I've never seen it before.

    Yes, Brendan Gleeson plays The Red Fox, who had to go and get himself shot and inconvenience everyone, and Brian Blessed is Cluny MacPherson hot at the cards. This is a good version.
