First Festival
This is my first year where I can wear a kilt to a festival but am not sure how to go about it.
The only kilt that I have I bought as a "never picked up order". I am not even sure what the tartan is although I have not searched deeply.
My question would be do I wear the kilt I know little about but am proud to wear or do I get myself a sportskilt in a tartan I know? It would seem a shame to wear a kilt to a festival where someone else might have better knowledge. If anyone were to ask me anything other than "How much did that cost?" I couldn't say anything other than "yes, it IS a nice green, isn't it!"
So, should I go for it? Or should I get myself a nice clergy or airforce tartan that I am "qualified" to wear and go with that?
My family name on my grandmothers side is MacCracken (midwest kansas missouri arkansas scots) and most searches lead me back to the Maclean's and once in a while to the MacNaughtons. After having read some of the entries here I am leaning towards MacNaughton. I know so very little about my geneology and what with being a Smith on my fathers side I think the term "mudblood" fits better than anything!
Whatever I do my very last option is to wear some decent shorts and see if they have another kilt I can get while at the fest. Then I can answer with complete honesty...
"I got it from that booth over there!"

If you post a pic, I'm sure there are experts that'll ID it immediately.
I've never had anyone ask what tartan I was wearing. I'd just put it on and be proud to be seen!

I agree. A far bigger question for you right now is how to wear it properly.
Are you a clergyman?

Wear what you have. If someone asks the tartan make something up...if they knew they'd not ask. Maybe you'll get lucky and someone will come up and name the tartan...but be aware...they're often wrong.
Just kilt up and enjoy.

I agree that you should wear what you want. Knowing the tartan can make for some great conversation because people are interested and maybe someone here can help if you post a picture.
As to being a Smith on your Father's side- Smith is actually a very common name in Scotland. There is smith tartan (and all the variations of ancient and weathered) which goes back to the 1800's and while some claim there is no official clan there is a clan crest (actually I've found at least two).

Post a photo of the tartan so we can ID it, then look it up!

I say wear it. There is no reason not to wear a kilt that you like. Put it on and enjoy the day.

Agreed. Someone here will be able to I.D. it.

Thanks for the response!
I hadn't thought that if they are asking then they won't know any better than I! LOL!
Here are a couple of pics. The first is Gregarious Fain MacCracken the 4th and his boy.
The second is a detail.
Also, as a note, I hold a license with my denomination and it is, if I understand correctly, for life unless revoked by the presbyters. As there isn't a local congregation in my community I tend to do more counseling than ministry while at the same time growing in the belief that making someone elses life more bearable in anyway is the greatest calling. I also served in the USAF from 88 - 93.
Again, thanks for all your resonses!
