    Kilt Pockets

Someone sent me an e-mail asking to share my idea/pattern for the pockets, so I am going to try my best to explain this and show a some with pictures along the way. A few things to keep in mind, the distance from my waist to my hips is 5", this is also where I gathered/darted the pleats together. I used a simple cotton muslin for pocket material. I cut 4 of them 7" wide x 15" long. Once I figured which pleats I was going to tuck them in and hide them I measured from the waist mark down 5" and then an other 5" for the pocket opening and did not sew my down that inside pleat.

These pictures are of the inside/wrong side of the kilt

I cut a slit in the kilt from the two marks along what would become the pleated edge. I placed one piece of the muslin on each side of the slit on the outside/right side of the kilt and sewed the pieces to the kilt along the slit on both edges.

I then turned the muslin pieces to the inside of the kilt and sewed the pieces along the slit on the outside/right side of the kilt across the bottom up the other side of the slit and across top to give the pocket a finished sewn look and to make it a little more sturdy.

I then sewed the inside pleat of the pleat that the pocket is attached to including the muslin.

    Sorry no picture here.

On the inside of the kilt, I laid the two pieces together and sewed the edges together to form the pocket.

To close off the top of the pocket and to keep the pocket supported I sewed the top of it when I sewed the waist band around the entire kilt

I hope this clears things up. If not, I will try to clarify more.

That's a very good explanation and the it seems fairly simply. THanks for posting that information.

I always wondered how the hidden pockets on a kilt were done, this explains a lot. Thank you.

Excellent. I think I will risk one of my lesser kilts and try a retrofit.

Here is a close up shot of the pocket. After I sewed the muslin to the outside/right side of the kilt, I then folded the muslin back to the inside of the kilt, I stitched the kilt material and the muslin together with the kilt on top.

I hope this clears up your question.

hmmmm, that looks nicer and easier than the way I had been doing pockets.
I like the way I came up with to cut a slant in the one pleat like the UK kilts, but it is a pain in the butt to do and I haven't figured out a way to make it really clean yet.
    Still working on it.
In the mean time, that is a much cleaner pocket than the last one I did.
I will have to incorporate it into my X-Kilt that I am finally gonna get built this weekend.
