Wedding Attire
Howdy all,
I've got a couple of weddings to attend in my future, and I was wondering. How hard is it to dress up at belted plaid?
I want to go semi-rustic, so I look different, but not so I look like I just walked out of a Jacobite Rebellion battle. I was thinking the BP, a vest/waistcoat, a rustic, Jacobite style shirt, bonnet, and nice hose with either low cut mocs or ghillies.
Any opinions? Thanks in advance.

Sounds good to me, I would, however, go loafers (got any with the gillie tassel?) rather than the more modern and formal gillie brogues. Basically, it all depends on how dressy the other guests will be. You will not blend in in any case, but you don't want to "out bride the bride" either.

Well, when I said brogues, I was thinking more of the homespun, handmade look, not the modern ones. That's also why I had said about the moccasins, (something low cut, not knee high or anything).

That is my only worry. I think everyone else will be shirt, tie, and slacks, so I don't want to go over that (aside from the 5 yards of material wrapped around my waist!).

As a guest, I dress to suit my host; especially upon such an important ceremonial occasion as a wedding or funeral. Unless it's a Renaissance/SCA-themed wedding I would strongly suggest something considerably more conservative, like a modern kilt, Argyll, & tie, worn with appropriate accoutrements.

I’d have to confer. With the other guest in ties and slacks the belted plaid may be a bit under dressed. Check with your host to be certain.

Just your average kilt wearing redneck.

My friend had one of those Renaissance/SCA-themed weddings. She was dressed as a barefoot princess, and all of the guests were in costoom. Lots of fun.
I ended up dressed as a hermit... I wasn't wearing kilts yet. She's the one who got me started wearing kilts though. I don't have any mind numbing advice... But the above sounds pretty good.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

weddings
My daughters wedding is Sunday (Aug 3). I will be formally kilted (at least as much as possible). Since the wedding party will be wearing tuxedos/gowns I opted to go without a PC jacket since the wedding is outdoors and it is going to be a warm day. So, I will be formal as well with a little comfort added without the jacket. But I will be in my waistcoat (the kind you can wear without a jacket). White dress shirt. Gillie's with white hose and cuffs and my white rabbit fur formal sporran. I also have a dirk, but still up in the air about that. If I were a guest instead, I would have worn loafers or dress shoes and colored or plain hose/socks. My semi formal sporran and Argyle jacket. One thing about kilt wearing...there are so many levels of dress, it's knowing which level to be at I guess.

What I have done in the past
I have been to several weddings kilted. Usually I go with a nice shirt, argyle jacket, a solid tie, my best kilt, some matching hose and a regular pair of wingtips (brogues). I also have asked the brides if they minded me coming in a kilt. NEVER ANGER A BRIDE ON THEIR WEDDING DAY BY SPRINGING A KILT ON THEM. I think the belted plaid will be more of a distraction. You are there for the bride and groom after all, not to show off how Scottish you are. This isint meant to offend, just my personal opinion.

I'm not wanting to pull out the BP to show off how Scottish I am. I was just looking back over Matt N's blog and saw the article on the dress plaid he had. Now that's a PLAID!
While I don't have much spare cash these days, I thought maybe I could dress up the BP enough to pull off something much similar to what Matt is wearing in that article.
Also, the brides expect me to be kilted, and I've told them I would not be offended to be asked to not wear a kilt, but that they should assume I'd be there kilted unless they said anything.
