Maple Leaf Tartan
This may be a little premature, but the anticipation is building.
Around the 1st of July I happened to look on the website for Fraser and Kirkbright and found they had remnants of some 16 ounce Maple Leaf Tartan on sale for $30 per meter!. I put in an order on the 4th of July for 4 meters and paid using PayPal. I know some others also were putting in orders for the same material, so I didn't really know if I got it or not. After waiting almost 4 weeks, I wrote to F&K and quickly heard back from Gordon, that yes, my material had been sent.
Now I'm waiting for it to arrive.
This happened so quickly that I didn't really have time to think about where I wanted to have the kilt made. It seems the tartan begs for a Canadian kiltmaker, and I've been wanting to place an order with our own Wizard of BC so I contacted Steve and he will make a nominal 8 yard traditional kilt whenever I can send the material back to Vancouver, BC, from whence it came. If I had thought this through earlier, I could have had the material sent straight to Steve. I just wish I could get frequent flyer miles on this material!
I think the Maple Leaf is a beautiful tartan. I'm planning to retire to Michigan in a couple of years and look forward to wearing it to some of the Scottish Games in Canada in the future.
This will make kilt number 14.
Just have to be patient.
Tom

Congratulations Tom, it truly is a beautiful tartan, of course once you are in Michigan we will have to have a SOKS gathering for you and your Maple Leaf kilt.

I purchased 5 meters of the same material and have started to sew pleats. Left handed box pleats to the red stripes. The other piece will be left handed to the dark stripes
I was hoping to have it complete before my Canadian sister arrived but that will be in a couple of days so I guess I won't have it complete.
It is a wonderful tartan and I will get two nice wool kilts for this winter and many years to come.

I also bought 5 meters of the fabric and it will be turned into two box pleats... One for me and one for my bride...

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Looks like team Maple Leaf will soon equal team Isle of Skye in membership! I can't wait to see all these wonderful new kilts show up on XMarks!

How does the "regular" Fraser and Kirkbright Maple Leaf stack up? A Hay got the 16 ounce and the regular is listed as being a 12 ounce...I have some of the last run of Xmarks from them but can't recall what the weight of that material is supposed to be. Having just gotten the 13 ounce Robertson Hunting, I'm thinking that I'm tending toward the slightly lighter than 16 ounce material for future kilts.
Anybody have one made of the 12 ounce F&K Maple Leaf?

My experience with F&K's lighter weight tartan is that it doesn't have a kilting selvedge, which means that you'd need to put a hem in the kilt. You might want to check before you order. Having said that, hems aren't bad and don't show if done properly.

Is this PV material from Marton Mills or F&K?

I can't answer as to the origin of the material that MacHummel uses but I can attest to the quality of kilt that he makes with that material.
