Solo piping, non white hose ok?
Hello all
Is it considered appropriate to wear colored hose when solo piping, say dedications, funerals, weddings etc? Or will most events "expect" white?
I have lovat green on the way for my dark green and black MacAuley (avatar), but want to be "correct". For piping are there times a color, or not, is expected?
Thanks all
Eric

Rather! I have seen everything from scarlet kilt hose, to argyle, to diced to any colour you want! ( I personally like a pair of tartan ones for the sake of tradition, I would love to see highland dress return to it roots more.) If the judge commetns on what type of kilt you are wearing, what jacket or shoes, or the colour of any of the above s/he is a pretty poor judge indeed. The people you play for aren't pick about what you wear usually (unless they ask for something specific) as long as it si celtic they don't care.

I never, ever wear white hose. Mine are rifle green, Lovat green, Argyll to match one kilt, Argyll hose tops to match another, and diced, all depending upon which kilt I'm wearing and the level of formality required. I've even got a set of black hose, for one tartan similar to Black Stewart (New World Celts). I firmly believe that the one and only reason you see so many white socks is because that's the easiest and cheapest for kilt hires and pipe bands to deploy, and the only time they look even remotely passable is on the legs of a Catholic schoolgirl.

The only time you have to wear white kilt hose while piping is when the obstinent Pipe Major of your pipe band insists.

I have to agree totally! I sing in a "bereavement" choir, and quite often there is a piper requested for the final commendation. I have seen every colour there is, as well as white and black. The last one had argyle pattern that matched his kilt! (Can't imagine what those cost or where he got them.!)
The pipes are calling, resistance is futile. - MacTalla Mor
