Man Freedom
I threw on my MacLeod of Harris kilt to go to the laundromat this morning. After throwing the clothes in the machine, I walked up the street to get some coffee and walked past where folks are in the process of setting up for a local street fair.
An African-American guy who was helping his wife set up her booth pointed at me and said, "I want me one of them after all, grandpa was a McClinton." His wife rolled her eyes and he said, "What? That's Man Freedom!"
UPDATE: Back outside walking around the street fair with my dog and one Black guy said, "I like your quilt!" I just laughed and thanked him.

Smart man. And this is direct contrast to my usual experience. In my experience, it's the black women who love my kilt, and the men looking at me like I'm a bug that needs to be stepped on.

His wife was freaking out that he would even think of it, she was really worried about "what's under it."

One of my black colleagues when I was teaching got a bulk mailing inviting him to a gathering of the Clan of his name. He showed it to me and asked if he should go. I said "Why not? Your name is MacWhatever." He finally decided to do it to see what the response would be. The Monday following he was estactic . Seems he was welcomed like a long lost relative, and had a wonderful time.

I know a song with the following lines;
And whether the blood be highland, lowland or no.
And whether the skin be black or white as the snow,
Of kith and of kin we are one, be it right be it wrong,
As long as the heart be true to the lilt of a song.
That about says it all really

I love you. Those are GREAT lyrics. Who wrote that? I don't recognize it, and I'd like to use on my MySpace and web page.

That's really cool! I can understand his apprehension (or perhaps skepticality is a better word?), considering the likely manner in which he received his last name. The fact that he went and was welcomed in is really great! In the not so distant past that would have been unheard of!
