pleated to set or stripe????
So..... pleated to set or stripe? Is it just a personal preference? What is your preference?

I do believe that would depend quite a bit on the tartan. I have heard that the stripe may look to busy in some cases... Just what I heard.

My first kilt, the MaCauley hunting in my avatar, is pleat to sett. I figured when I joined a band, that kilt would be to stripe, so I could have two types.
That way I would have an "appropriate" type depending on the event.
Now though, I have a (non band related) USAK American Heritage on order pleat to stripe, just because, to show some variety in a kilt. Next kilt will probly be to stripe as well, depending on tartan.
I also agree with Ted.

Unless one has a preference for the pleating type, I'd say that to sett or to stripe is dependent on the effect one wants from the plaid.

I find that pleating to the stripe can add a dramatic effect to the pleats. But not all tartans can be pleated to the stripe. Take the MacDonald for instance, it doesn't have a stripe element that is dramatic, so I would pleat the Macdonald to the sett.

Pleating to Sett or Stripe really is your choice, and it all depends on the tartan and your personal taste. For example most of my kilts are pleated to Sett, however I chose to have my Royal Naval Association kilt pleated to the Stripe as it is a tartan for a military association. I have had many compliments on the pleating of that kilt, far more than any of my other kilts, it is quite dramatic.
Here is what the Royal Naval Association Pleated to the Stripe looks like I really think it was the right choice and I could not be happier.

Mine is a MacGregor of Cardney, also know as MacGregor Hunting (though the clan Chief does not recognize it as Hunting) pleated to sett.
It was explained to me, that traditionally pleating to stripe was reserved for the military while the clans pleated to sett.

I looked hard at this...and just coincidentally I was watching "Tunes of Glory" for about the third time when I was thinking it over.
There is a scene in the movie where a squad is marching down an street and you see the kilts from the back. They were, of course being military kilts, all pleated to stripe. Nowadays, you can get a kilt pleated to sett or to stripe or to horizontal and it doesn't really have anything to do with military or non-military.
Now everyone will tell you that one of the great things about a kilt ...especially an eight yard kilt as opposed to a four yard kilt...is the "swing."
Well, a kilt that is pleated to stripe acquires a lot of "verticality" just for the simple reason that the eye follows those stripes so readily. So, "swing" is enhanced.
When a kilt is pleated to sett it will look pretty much the same in the back as in the front.
Here are two photos of my 16 ounce Scotland National pleated to stripe.

I think the Scotland National would be a very different kilt if it were pleated to sett.

I'll echo the "it's up to you" sentiment. But, I'll take the oppurtunity to show off the neat-o pleating to the stripe on my Red Morrison tartan.
