Colin the Iconoclast

My son, Colin, is 12 years old, in 7th grade. I bought him a SK Hunter Casual for his birthday in August. I have only seen him wear it twice. And I don't push things with him. He sees me kilted almost every day. Last night he mentioned to me that he had asked his teacher at school if he could wear his kilt sometime. She is of Scottish heritage and didn't see a reason to say no, but just to be sure she sent him with his question to the vice principal. He said- not a good idea as it would distract the other students. Now I am not for bashing the VP-(so rest easy Palin and Biden, this time), I understand, just the same I checked the dress code and no mention of kilts, just maintaining a nice personal appearance. Colin tells me he may wear it anyway on one of the early release days. Stones! to make a father proud!

Then he tells me that on Monday night he went kilted (and with necktie) to a new student's home to hang out. I was out that night so I didn't see or know. Kudos Colin!

Now I have to set him up with a sporran.

My son is also eager to wear his kilt to school. He's a middle-schooler -- a 6th-grader in the midst of 7th and 8th graders. Call me a wuss, but I suggested he wait until 8th grade, when he and his buddies are kings of the hallways. He's a very sensitive kid, and I'm concerned one sideways comment from an older kid would cause problems.

But I think the vice principal's excuse is weak sauce.

Water! If the Caledonian society finds out about this.

Colin is a sensitive kid, too, Which is why I am surprised. But he is among the popular kids in his class, so that helps. I did suggest he wear a pair of shorts underneath, which he had already considered- because I know that among the kids there some will want to look. (Apologies to the fashion police- I'll take the ticket.)

I wonder if they let the little pre-teen girls dress "distracting" at his school.

Also I've learned it's better to ask for forgiveness that for permission. if you ask permission and are told no, then you would be disobeying direct orders to not do something. If you just do it, you force them to breach a discrimination issue.

Well done to you son you should be proud, my son is 5 years old and currently he only wears his to events like the highland games, or celtic festivals. I think he'll have a pretty big pair of stones on him though once he gets to Middle School.

Good for Colin et al. Maybe a little education for the VP is in order. It seems obvious to anyone with a brain that after the initial shock of the kilt at school, no one would care.

That is really cool that your son wants to do that. I have to say it takes a good sense of self to want to do that. Sounds like you have quite a son there. Good on both of ya!

Scooby goes to a school with a uniform. He said he wanted to wear his kilt for free dress day last year, but chickened out at the last moment. I think he'll do it this year since he has the denim X Kilt now; it should look good with a school polo or logo T. He also does wear shorts underneath at the games or at school.

I don't have to worry about this (I wish I had to though), I have a daughter whom is three years old. I also have another daughter who is due to arrive in this world on christmas day. Both can wear kilts,er, skirts i mean w/o a second glance.

Congratulations, we all will look forward to photos in December/January, what a Christmas gift. My daughter is now 18, not impressed with kilt wearing dad, but most impressed with Juicy Couture so maybe down the road. But I really miss the time when she was 3.

Well I think it's a great thing for him and You that he's wearing the kilt, I just hope the world has smartened up some since a few month ago when a Boy got sent home for wearing a Kilt on His Schools Heritage Day and is was His Family Tartan!!

And I wish I could feel as proud as you and that I had a Boy to go with my darling Little girl But thats the way the genes mix.
