    kilt pin?

Maybe it's because I haven't seen kilt pins as ornate as this, but it looks like a pin that a woman would wear on her suit jacket rather than a kilt pin. On a colorful tartan, the colors of the pin would be lost. I guess the colors would pop on a solid colored casual kilt, but then wouldn't the pin be too fancy?

The company's still in business, see their kilt pins here. Most are in a quasi-sword or safety pin style, but with the same range of colored stones. The shape of the eBay pin seems more brooch-like but the company sure isn't afraid of colors on any of their pieces!

You know, other than a standard sword pin, all of my kilt pins are homemade or pins that wern't intended to be kilt pins. Something special to me like a skeleton key that belonged to my grandmother that I have sewn to a ribbin. Moosedog sent me a zebra pin that happen to be a lot like a zebra sculpture I made. Click on the "Clan Zebra!" link that I have in my signature right now to see the picture of them.

It doesn't really matter how fancy the pin is, I want it to have some kind of special meaning to me.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

It may have started life as a brooch but, if you so desire, it could be a kilt pin. It is not what would be called "traditional" but it would look good on the right kilt. Remember, the purpose of the kilt pin is 1) to hold down the kilt apron 2) to add a little "bling" to your outfit. Think outside the box and you'll be surprized what wonders you can find.

My mother used to wear those as a brooch,to my eyes they are a bit cumbersome to be a kilt pin.

Definitely looks like a brooch-perhaps one that could be worn with a tartan sash or shawl. Not colors I would wear, but it might compliment some tartans.
