I ordered a sportkilt in the wrong size, not too big a deal since I'm on the way down, but I wanted a kilt so I made one. Some reminent fabric online and in two days of stitching I ended up with this.
I had some online directions for a regular kilt however I prefer box pleats for their use of less fabric and lighter weight, mostly less fabric. I did some searching here for how to do box pleats and ended up with some mathmatical formulas for the pleats that lost me somehow so I measured the sett, wrote down a quick diagram and filled in the measures. So I believe this is to the sett but I'm not that good with the terminology yet.
I measured the length of the kilt to the hips and brought in the top of the pleats for the waist measurement. The directions mentioned how to do a waist piece that was two parts but since I had a wide enough piece I simply folded it completely over the top and used a crap load of pins to hold both sides matching the pattern in the outside. This gives a nice match up on the outside but some bunching of the fabric at the very top of the cover since the hips are 48" and the waist 42".
Wanting to keep things easy to wear I added 3 belt loops that I matched to the sett.
And this is the inside of the waist piece. The pattern doesn't match since these are the inside of the pleats.
I've decided I dislike not having pockets. I will be buying a sporran or making one but I will also design pockets for under the apron.
I have ordered another 5 yards to make a second kilt which I will attempt to hand stitch. I'd like to order some priest sett for a kilt for this easter when I'm doing the service at my church internship. Only problem is that it is 28" wide and 50+ a yard so I'd better have the technique down pat before jumping into that fabric. So I need thoughts or ideas on what looks right, what can be improved and what might be a better way to do things.
