an odd offer
This afternoon I had the mom of a prospective bride ask a first. In the wedding “trade”, mothers of the bride are known as “MOBs”.
Anyway, said MOB made the usual inquiries regarding my piping at her daughter’s wedding next spring.
The question that took me back a bit was that she asked me wear a kilt with the family’s tartan. “Of course”, said I. “Would be more than happy to so do. You will need my measurements for the kiltmaker.”
She sounded stunned: “You mean you expect us to pay for it?”
I explained the expense of these garments and if she preferred I could take care of matter myself and she could reimburse me.
To which the MOB asked, “Will you accept the kilt in lieu of your performance fee?”
Not the oddest encounter with a MOB, just found the offered method of payment a bit out of the ordinary. As you may guess, I declined her offer. Intuition tells me this ain’t a done deal.
Also - it was a mighty ugly tartan.
Slainte yall,
steve

hey, there isn't a better way to get someone to pay for a kilt for you.

Perhaps she would pay for the rental of their tartan, and still pay you to pipe.

Did I say it was a really ugly tartan? And unusual.
Besides, my creditors prefer I accept currency.

<< What tartan was it? >>
That I'm keeping to myself. A whole gaggle of people here might find my remark offensive.
Trust me - it's as ugly as a dog's butt.

I think I would have told her that the fee just went up several hundred dollars.
Makes me wonder though if any of her other family members had a kilt in said asthetically challenged tartan that would fit you?

I got that once- it's how I got my saffron. That was more of a tip, though, than something in lieu of payment.
