I'm recasting the Wizard of Oz

Ted Turner's got on one of his 857 showings of the Wizard of Oz right now, and my wife and I were imagining who we would cast if we won the lottery and decided to remake the flick.

The Scarecrow would be played by a seriously-reined in Jim Carrey, since he's so physical. But he would have to tone it down a lot. After all, the Scarecrow can't steal the movie.

The Tinman needs to have a sweet and loveable air about him. Get me Vince Vaughn on the phone.

The Cowardly Lion is an easy pick for us: Nathan Lane.

The Wizard needs to be sort of a goober, but still loveable. My wife suggested Will Ferrell. I like it.

The Wicked Witch could go in a lot of different directions. We're going to have to call their people, but we're discussing Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson and Uma Thurman.

The Good Witch seems made for Julia Roberts, but that seems too easy. I like Cameron Diaz, but she may not have the subdued glamor to pull it off. Maybe Gwyneth Paltrow is the right pick.

Finally, the toughest call of all. Dorothy's got to be young and innocent, which leaves out girls like Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgins. We can't make up our minds. If you want nerdy innocence, you call Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin. If you want a pretty girl-next-door, call AnnaSophia Robb (she played Leslie, the wise girl of Bridge to Terabithia and mean old Violet Beauregard in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Your suggestions are solicited and welcomed!!!

I love your suggestions. I'll have to dwell on who I'd pick.

I'd go with Glenn Close for the Wicked Witch instead, although Meryl Streep certainly could get the job done.

Wouldn't object to Reese Witherspoon as Dorothy either.

If we were to suspend age as a limitation, I would pick Jewel Kilcher as Dorothy. She's had the role before.

On a lighter note, how about casting the penguins from Madagascar in the spot of the flying monkeys? It could develop into a twisted sub plot.

    Just a thought.

I could see either, or both, of Diedrich Bader and Ryan Stiles with parts. Bader did well (considering) in his part from Evil Alien Conquers. (sp?) Of course, Wayne David Parker would make an interesting Lion, as from his part in Escanaba in da moonlight.
