2 part question..what tartan exactly and ebayer?

    Ok,
Wied title I know. But here's the thing. I found this on Ebay. It is listedas a Ancient Hunting Fraser. Now I THOUGHT that that is what I got from Matt last year...I may be wrong about the name though I think it may have been titled "Modern Ancient Fraser",,,but I am not sure. See the bottom pic. Now, I look at Rocky's site and he has the same tartan listed as just regular Fraser Hunting..then when I look it up I get all kinds of different tartans fro Fraser Ancient HUNTing...Can anyone for definate tell me what the title is on this one?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=130259407032

Also, has anyone dealt with this seller?

    thanks,
    Chad

Here is the fraser that I have now which after thinking about is actually the "Modern Ancient Fraser"

    Clues:

Mixed fiber? Teflon coated? The only thing that that immediately suggests is Poly Viscose. And there is a Hunting Fraser in PV...look at the USA Kilts website and you'll see that Rocky stocks it so I'll speculate that it's probably Marton Mills fabric.

I can't recall off the top of my head right now if you got the modern Hunting Fraser from me or the ancient Hunting Fraser. The lighting in the pic you posted is not all that great. so it's kind of hard to tell. If memory serves, though, you did get the ancient Hunting Fraser.

But I just wanted to clarify that there is no such thing as "Modern Ancient Fraser." A tartan is either woven in the modern colors or the ancient colors. The two are exclusive. You can read about tartan color schemes here:
    http://albanach.org/colors.html

But you are right, the Ebay kilt does look different. Here is why. The kilt you have from me was made from premeir heavy weight kilt cloth, 100% wool, woven by Lochcarron of Scotland. The Ebay kilt is made from synthetic material, woven in Asia, more than likely in Pakistan. While you will notice some color differences among woolen mills even in Scotland (Lochcarron's ancient Hunting Fraser will look a bit different than House of Edgar's anient Hunting Fraser, for example), tartan cloth woven in Pakistan has a reputation for the colors being "starker" than in Scottish cloth, for lack of a better term. That's a good part of what you are seeing here.

Another thing to consider is the fact that the Asian mills don't always get the tartan pattern correct, either. In this case, they wove the Hunting Fraser without the white stripe. So it's really not the Hunting Fraser at all, but some variation of it.

    Buyer beware!

I don't know nothin' 'bout namin' no tartan, but I do know I found glengarries for my son and I at far less than I've been able to find them anywhere else. I know: you get what you pay for. But when the only time you anticipate wearing one is when you're marching with the band -- 4x, maybe 5x a year -- I think these will do just fine.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

Thanks for clearing that up Matt. So I guess it safe to say that that tartan and the one that USA Kilts has is not technically or correctly the Ancient Hunting Fraser? I really do like the looks of the contrast between the blues and reds...kind of interesting...I knew it was a PV Kilt....hmm, I may have to reconsider..
    thanks!

The "Fraser Hunting" shown on the USA Kilts web site appears to be the same design as the Ebay Kilt. Here is what they show:

The notes that they give about the tartan on their web site, though, really pertain to what the Scottish Tartans Authority lists as tartan No. 1659 in their Index, which is the correct sett of the Fraser Hunting.

    The Fraser Hunting tartan was created by replacing the red in the standard Fraser clan tartan with brown, and then changing every other white stripe to red. Here is an image of Lochcarron's cloth in this tartan (ancient colors);

The PV cloth that USA Kilts uses, and that the Ebay kilt seems to be in, replaces every white stripe with red, so that there is no white at all. This is not the correct sett. So it would be more accurate to describe this tartan as a fashion tartan based on the Hunting Fraser tartan.
