More details on making a sporran
Hello all!
I hope you will excuse me since I am still new at this. I am a person that has only recently started wearing a kilt. I just received J. Charles Thompson's book about wearing kilt. Once I read the part on sporrans, I realized that I need a different one. However, they are all to expensive (at least the ones I want) so I am embarking on a journey to make one of my own. When I look at the one I have, the basic construction does not look that different. However, mine is not a formal sporran, and that is what I want to make. I have some quality fur to use, but I don't know where to start. I am just wondering if anyone out there is willing to give a newbie some basic advice on what to do. Thanks!
Brice

Take a look at this pattern if you haven't seen it yet. It might give you some direction.

Formal sporrans are a good bit less "baggy" than the one in the book. They are usually fairly less roomy, traditionally that is. They also usually have a little "bling" to them whether it's metal rivets placed in a pattern or a full blown metal cantle at the top.
Peruse this sporran page and see what features appeal to you and head in that direction

Best of luck! No matter how it turns out, a sporran that you made yourself will be one you will always treasure.

Thanks. I have an idea as to which way I want to go. I just don't know where to start. Do I use the same 8oz leacher and just put the fur over it? Or do I use a different material to give me the shape of the sporran. That is kind of what I am looking for.
