Looking at your picture on another thread, your kilt pin is not far out. For me, I think I would move it down an inch, to an inch and a half. In truth, it is up to you. I hope you don't mind me reminding you that the pin only goes through the outer apron.

Indeed, if you even need one... Perhaps more likely with a 'casual' affair rather than a full weight kilt.
All the best, Graham.

Hello,
I was always taught by my Da who was taught by his Da ( frae Scotland, who was taught I assume frae his Da, you get tha point) that 2 inches over frae the fringe and 4 inches up frae kilt selvedge tae the bottom of pin. Also, has others have already pointed out, the pin only goes through the outer apron. Reason being, if you pin through both aprons their is a high risk of damage to your kilt and we certainly do not want that to happen. The pin is essentially there for a wee bit of weight to keep the apron down in case of a Marilyn Monroe moment ( strong breeze lifting the aprons up exposing the secret ), but typically with a good heavy weight tank the issue is rare and more so a fashion element of which I am guilty of as well . Of course you could always just wear it any way you please . I hope my suggestion helped you though. Take care and be well.

Eyeball it to where you like it.

I try to get mine in the lower right side within 5-6 inches of the fringe and selvedge, but within that area I try to integrate the design of the pin with the tartan. for example, with an elongated pin I like to run it along a vertical stripe. With a round or ovoid pin I go for a center of a square OR an intersection of the tartan pattern.

I am still trying to figure out why I have seen a tv show from England in the 1960's and several photos of military men who had the pin just below the hip.

I have several very heavy kilt pins - I wear them about 3 inches up from the top of my knee cap and 2 to 3 inches in from the fringe. That way they are low enough to provide the weight to keep the apron down and yet high enough not to bounce against my knee cap when I am striding along, particularly when I am hiking and climbing hills.

My hard and fast rule for the location of the Kilt pin? Typically in a box or bag but not on a kilt.
I do have a small collection of kilt pins including a 150 year old silver "diaper pin" but I just don't make a general habit of wearing them. I reserve them for special occasions. Inserting kilt pins is quite tricky and I've unfortunately seem too many kilts with holes that at first glance look like moth bites. Leaving them installed too is not a good idea as it can wear down the fibres.. and other those made of stainless steel--- especially silver and gold--- can stain through oxidation.

I had that happen with a pewter pin. Any advice on how to get it out?
